An interesting article on reading a scroll more than 1,700 years old. The catch? The scroll was burned some time around 600 CE in the holy ark of a jewish temple, along with the rest of the surrounding community. Even simple extraction from the ruins in the 1970s further damaged the specimen.
But now, using X-Ray micro-CT scans and a specialized computer algorithm, archeologists have been able to piece together images of the scroll's text! After finding an expert capable of reading the ancient Hebrew, it was determined that the scroll was from the first two chapters of Leviticus, which deals with laws reguarding burnt offerings.
