i Saw actual fights over which characters werw asexual and autistic

Yeah, Tumblr quickly tried to read way too deeply into it. Instead of embracing a game that breaks the mold a little with strong female and gay characters they have to debate it to pieces...

Anyway, as for explaining what this game is about, that really is tough without spoiling it.

In a nutshell, it is an RPG in a retro style similar to Earthbound with a focus on characters, humor and personal choices. It is also a game that you can finish without killing anyone. All conflicts can be resolved by escaping, acting a certain way to make the enemy not hate you or beating them up until they don't want to fight anymore. On the other hand you can also kill EVERYONE. As in hunting down the random encounters until you meet no more enemies. This also drastically changes the entire course of the game and alters your save file.

There is also a ton of fourth wall breaking going on. Being able to save your game and reloading after death or after something happened that you don't like is an actual part of the story surrounding one of the characters.

For the first part of the "pacifist route" it essentially plays out like any other game. You meet new characters, you learn about the backstory of the world and so on. But at a certain point the game starts to become very bizarre, creepy even.

To make it short, figuring out how deep this rabbit hole really goes and what the heck is going on in that game world is incredibly rewarding because the storytelling and characters are all excellent :)

There are also many dogs to be met and pet during the course of the game, maybe that makes it more relevant for you :D

Seriously why do skeletons have like glowy dicks all of a sudden? Where the fuck did that even come from?

Spoilers for the geno run:

Probably because of Sans' glowy eye during his boss fight?
That's the only connection I can make.
But I don't browse the undertail tag in general.

Undertale is basically Earthbound-Monsterparty-Gradius.
With a whole lot of mindfuck.
And characters the game actually makes you give a shit about. (All of them, depending on how many runs you want to do.)

Tumblrites aren't people. They're simply people who've transcended the mere mortal realms of memery to a higher plane of memeing.where the terms "omnisexual" and "zer" are used unironically.

I've made up my mind. This is by far the best track.

T-t...too spooky, dude

Edit: Also christ, Undertale has got to be the quickest game picked up and heavily populated for rule 34 I've ever seen.

I beat it pacifist in one sitting one night. I don't think there has ever been a game that made me cry before this one, and man did I cry.

This game is just pure perfection in my book.

Honestly, I don't think I can ever bring myself to do a Genocide run. I just went to youtube and watched that 1-hour-long vid of all the differences in it. Heavy stuff.

When I bought the game I wanted to go pacifist first and do a genocide run afterwards.

Nope. Not gonna happen! The game managed to make me have strong emotions for pixels and now I can't bring myself to it. I had so much fun with these characters, I can't bring myself to hunt them down.

But I did watch the video with the differences as well. The genocide run is just messed up... Especially if you come froma  genocide run.

Joel on Vinesauce was streaming the game. He did a pacifist run first and wanted to do a genocide run afterwards. I was looking forward to that, saves me the trouble ;D But no, he can't bring himself to do it either.

Edit: By the way, my favorite part of the genocide run is probably what you can do to that poor snowman! xD

GILF's mang.

Also there's now an Undertale porn subreddit that's hilariously enough linked from the "official" one. Meme power is quickly reaching 100%, we can't stop it...

And of course there is plenty of monster kid porn... The game has so many awesome characters, why would you pick the kid? D:

Edit:

Vinny from Vinesauce was streaming Yoshi's Wooly World yesterday. World 1 overworld, guess what he found? Yup, Miiverse posts with Undertale art. That game really is everywhere now!

I AM HAVING A BAD TIME

You brought this onto yourself. You are a terrible person and you deserve it for what you did.

Also...

...isn't it kind of Sans' fault that everyone got murdered after Frisk left Snowdin during the genocide route? He was clearly watching over Frisk because Toriel asked him to. He watched while Frisk killed everyone and only decided to stop you at the very end when it was already too late, when Chara had become so strong that it could even destroy Sans.

He could easily have stopped Chara in Snowdin, they were not that strong yet. After wiping out everyone in the snowy forest Chara's goal was pretty much clear. He should have stepped in when Chara confronted Papyrus.

At the very latest it should have been clear to him that Frisk/Chara need to be stopped when they killed Undyne the Undying.

Just how I feel about that :P

The way I always interpreted that was:

Sans said he figured once Frisk/Chara escaped to the surface and got his fill of killing, he would be happy and stop there.  Sans then would figure it wouldn't really matter since it would all be reset.  But as Frisk/Chara made it clear they wanted to destroy everything, including all of the timelines, Sans had to step in or else a reset wouldn't even fix it.

I love the concept of a character that's so powerful that they can see through the game and don't have to follow the established mechanics anymore (Sans dodging your attacks, blacking out the screen, swinging at you when it's not his turn and you're just trying to get through your menu)

Everything would be reset, and then what? Chara would still destroy everything again.

With power comes responsibility, and Sans is clearly the strongest monster in the underground (at least as far as we know). So it was his responsibility to keep everyone safe and he failed. He completely missjudged the situation and only decided to step in when it was too late. And considering what happens when you spare him during the fight he could have ambushed Chara, too.

Undyne realized what was going on and decided to act. I guess that is why the title of her piece of the soundtrack, "Battle against a true hero", is so fitting.

The only issue is that Chara could always go back to the save file after being defeated. But that doesn't really matter. My point is that he didn't even try until it was too late.

It's just one of those awesome ways how the game is messing with you and why it is effing perfect.

The whole build up around Sans, both during the pacifist and the genocide route, hypes up the fight against him so much! During the whole game you know that there is something up with Sans, that he isn't just a lazy comedian who likes bad knock knock jokes. He is a laid back guy, but you just know there is something creepy going on with him. And then at the end the fight against him does not disappoint at all. Next to Undyne he is the only actual threat during the genocide route. He manipulates the game mechanics and even cuts out his own dialogue to catch you off guard!

Oh, and what is up with the machine and the blueprints in his basement? More stuff surrounding the mystery about Dr. Gaster? Who knows :o

I just always chalked it up to him being lazy, figuring everything would fix itself, until he saw that he had no choice.

Plus I think many people would have quit if you had to do his fight right after Snowden xD

Nope, it's your fault. You chose the genocide path and this is what you get. It's cosmic justice at work. If you kill goat mom you have a bad time. Have fun.

I'm not saying I'd fuck a goat. I would fuck a skeleton though.

Anyway, let's talk about Gaster a bit.
Personally, I find the idea surrounding him to be really fascinating. Not as a character, specifically, but what he represents.

He is literally a dummied-out NPC, in game development, and in-universe.

His story, in canon, is that something happened, and his being got shattered and dispersed through space and time (read: game data). To the point where (probably) no even knows he ever existed (read: removed from canon).
You literally have to hack the game to find what little information exists.
And what little does exist is [some creepy shit].

Personally, I hope they do more with this plotline.
And, on some level, I feel like this was all intentional. Because they knew people would go digging around in the game code.

If it is, it's certainly an interesting extra bit of canon for such a meta game.

I did the pacifist run first....

After I (accidentally) killed Toriel, I felt awful and started over. I know I originally planned to do a genocide run, but I expected the whole spare/kill mechanic to be a gimmick. The game made me hate myself for considering it, though. This game really makes you ask a lot of questions about your humanity. I definitely couldn't kill somebody in real life, even if they wanted to hurt me. I don't have that capacity in me. My natural curiosity makes me want to do a genocide or neutral run, but that would alter my save file permanently. I like them where they are now: safe and happy. To someone who has done the other two playthroughs: is it worth it to do all three? Extra exposition? If so, please don't put spoilers in your answer.

there is some extra exposition and a few great boss fights that you will miss out on in a genocide run. That said if you don't enjoy really hard boss fights you're going to have a bad time and should just watch a run on YouTube

I love hard boss fights!

But those bosses are my friends...

Why does this existential masterpiece have to exist??? The genocide route is like Pandora's Box. I want to open it just to see what's in there, but there's no closing it
