Ever since Shrek.

As stupid and memey as it sounds, Shrek is honest-to-god one of the most important movies of the 21st century so far.

Totally.

The success of Shrek gave us more characters in the vein of Shrek, more of that style of comedy in animated movies and trailers, and more "twisted fairytale" movies. I'm also tempted to say Shrek helped to normalize the idea of the animated sequel.

A large part of why so many people found Dreamworks' animated movies annoying and derivative for a while is that they kept repeating the same basic comedy formula that had worked with Shrek. Notice how Blue Sky, Sony, and other studios have tried to mimic that same style.

But, people also forget that the original Shrek was a pretty damn good movie. (Especially since the third sequel in particular was so blah.) I said the other day that it's one of four movies whose romantic subplot I actually relate to and take seriously, which is saying something. In its day, it was funny and innovative.

Yeah. Say what you want about Shrek, but after watching something as godawful as 'Shark Tale' you really learn to appreciate how bad that style of writing can really get, and how well done Shrek and especially Shrek 2 (aka one of the few sequels that's improves literally everything) really is.

Seriously Shark Tale is just like...wow. How did we as a species ever let that happen? It's a shame everyone forgot about it since that movie is like the ultimate example of everything wrong with the post-Shrek era of animated movies. Also Will Smith fish is like the creepiest fucking thing holy shit.

Katzenberg wanted very badly for that movie to get released before Finding Nemo, so it was rushed out. This was the case for a lot of DreamWorks animated movies early on. Katzenberg used to work for Disney and knew what Disney was going to have in pre-production for the next several years. Then he was denied a promotion at Disney, got super butthurt, left, co-founded his own studio, and tried to get back at Disney by beating them to the punch in theaters with conspicuously similar movies: Antz, Shark Tale, Madagascar, etc. Luckily that bullshit stopped and we were able to get things like Kung Fu Panda and How to Train Your Dragon.

I'm also tempted to say Shrek helped to normalize the idea of the animated sequel.

The trend did seem to happen around that time. There's some obvious benefits for doing a sequel: leveraging previous brand success, reusing assets, etc. But less obvious is this thing called E&O insurance. It stands for errors and omissions and covers things like copyright lawsuits. For movies with a huge audience and plenty of similar scripts and stories out in the wild with litigious people wanting their piece of the pie, dealing with copyright lawsuits can get extremely expensive. Film studios get sued for this all the time. Hell, Pixar--yes, Pixar, arguably the most creative and original animation studio--gets sued for copyright infringement frequently enough that they have their own in-house legal team.

E&O insurance becomes a hell of a lot cheaper when the film is a sequel or a licensed remake of a property that already exists, like a book or a comic strip. Someone can't really sue Warner Brothers for the content in the Harry Potter movies. They don't have the copyright on Harry Potter. They are going to have to sue J.K. Rowling. And Harry Potter has been around long enough that any lawsuits against the story has probably already happened. In that scenario, E&O insurance becomes very cheap for the movie studio.

As E&O insurance becomes more expensive, there's going to be more sequels and remakes based on properties that have already weathered the copyright infringement storm.

Shark Tale has the honor of being one of the few animated movies that I actively hate. Offhand, the only animated movie I hate more than Shark Tale is Doogal.

The one nice thing I could say about Shark Tale is that it arguably contains an "it's okay to be gay" subtext. (But, at the same time, the movie itself often seems uncomfortable with its "gay" character, so...) DeNiro Shark was also sort of cool, so there's two nice things.

Otherwise, it feels like a soulless, cynical, racist cash crab. The character designs are ugly, the characters look like they're swimming through air instead of water (/sperg), the plot is derivative and cliched, and the main character is a wholly unlikable asshole, and Jack Black's vegetarian (gay) shark isn't much better.

The final dance sequence with Christina Fishaguilera and Fishy Elliot or whatever the hell is the most desperate, forced, and awkward final dance in any animated film, ever. (Second place goes to Ice Age 4.)

Fuck this movie in the eye..

But yeah, wouldn't ya know it, Dreamworks' movies started to actually shine after they started to get over their hate boner for Disney. (But, said hatred for Disney fueled some of the really good jokes in Shrek, on the other hand.)

BUT, I have to say, Madagascar is a more memorable movie than The Wild (which wasn't a real Disney movie anyway), and as a teenager, at least, I preferred Antz to a Bug's Life. (There are also questions as to who ripped off whom in these cases.)

Man, I semi-anticipated the punchline of the "Mr. Big" gag, but the just-unexpected-enough twist they put on it had me in stitches.

The character designs are so diverse and expressive.

Who knows if it'll actually be "good" or "quality" by people's Pixar-spoiled standards, but it'll at least be a visual feast.

I'm actually a bit disappointed that the newest trailer pretty much spoiled the story. I would have gone in to watch it just because the whole animal thing looks interesting. I didn't need to know who the bunny was, how she met the fox, what the main conflict is, how they work together to solve it, and the reveal about the main bad guy.

By the way, I worked at Disney for almost a year, and there are a lot of furries in there. Like, a whole lot. But the artists tend to stay quiet about it, cause of the whole furry porn thing. They either don't want to be associated with it, or don't want to be busted for it, because the last thing Disney wants is one of their artists being revealed to have a whole pornography portfolio. So yeah, I wouldn't be at all surprised if this movie had some furry influences.

Especially since the latest trailer im uber hype for this, love the character design and the animation looks hella nice, not to mention my Columbian waifu is involved, [url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=booKP974B0k] although come one, they could have made her a wolf . And plus, holy fucking shit, are they just like purposely setting up opportunities for copious r34 with that last trailer?

Buff tigers in pants, naked and curvy hippo's and giraffes doing yoga, and a nude panther licking himself, the furpocalypse is here folks...

Just because they play a song in the trailer doesn't mean it will be in the movie :( Remember this promised awesomeness that ended up being bland in the theaters, with that music not even playing once? https://youtu.be/UY7Tge7ftxM

Me and my older sister went to see Star Wars on New Year's Eve....Eve and this was the only preview that didn't make my eyes roll to the back of my head (so. many. superheroes.). My sister laughed out loud at the sloth scene as did I. It looks really good and this comes from someone who isn't the biggest fan of 3d. I'm glad its something new that -I- like because I really want to take my little nephew to see it. I hope he likes it and becomes as obsessed with it as he was with Frozen because that uh...really started grinding on me after awhile (no offense if you like Frozen).

Of course all the non-furry sites I read are really hating on this film for some very predictable reasons. Makes me sigh but whatever, people don't change.

I hate the furfags that overly obsess over that fox's bedroom eyes. In fact, these movies would be more enjoyable if furries didn't openly masturbate over these characters on every form of social media.

But he is so cute. D:

I'm never going to actually watch the film, because I don't tend to watch this sort of thing anyway.

Zootopia vaguely reminds me of a mix of Rio de Janeiro, New York, and Monte Carlo. I wonder which real cities and locations they actually researched for the film.

Shakira seems like more of a margay than a gazelle to me. Just sayin'.

I haven't been a fan of many recent Pixarish movies, but I think this looks pretty fun. I think I'll take my little sister to see it if I can. It'll really make her day, and I'll have an non-creepy way to see a kid's movie MWAHAHAHAHA

Plus, she likes rabbits, I like foxes, win-win!!

All I want is one journal from some neckbeard furry complaining about a theater not letting them in with a fursuit. Just one.

I'd figure that's a certainty. Unfortunately more than likely more theaters will probably allow those furries into the theater and make it harder to see the screen for those behind them. Or just make people nearby uncomfortable. I seem to recall in the past for movie airings people actually PLANNED to go to these theaters wearing such suits. Not sure what became of those movies or what movies I remember seeing that for.
