I'd actually be interested to read or watch something thoughtful and intelligent about how Disney intends to navigate its furry fandom ties in light of all of the fandom's porn and such.

We are as well. Disney is in a privileged position, having a lot more resources to sculpt the overall mind share of its IP, as opposed to leaving 90% of that fate to the fan community (which is the case of a lot of independent work). The theme of the story -- if Rotten Tomatoes is any indication -- overpowered many of the problems with the story itself when it came to giving the movie merit. I would think the same went for any negative press over that marketing strategy. Negative press is still press of course, and it got people talking about it. We don't think playing the furry angle is why it got as highly rated as it did, or why people wanted to see it. We think playing the furry angle got people to talk about it. If you are a small production you'll probably want to be more careful about the community you attract, but Disney has so much mass appeal that is not a problem.

It seems it was good for the big head but what about the long tail? We'll be paying very close attention to how much merchandise is sold. Many people wanted to watch it, but how many people are going to buy Zootopia merch? Are people going to be more or less comfortable wearing Zootopia branded merch because of Disney's marketing campaign leading up to the movie?

That is a good question.  I can't imagine that the movie will sell as many girls dresses, but the movie isn't as gender specific as a lot of Disney films some maybe there is a bigger market for merchandise?  My daughter (8) already announced she wanted to be Judy Hopps for Halloween.  I was both intrigued and horrified by this statement.

Lol!! No, pretty tame actually.

Ok, that's actually pretty cute, but I can't imagine they will sell as many of those as they sold Elsa dresses.  You couldn't throw a Snickers bar last Halloween without hitting a little girl in an Elsa dress.

I'm still enjoying a bit o' schadenfreude watching non-furs fret over liking Zootopia, because someone might think they're ONE OF THOSE FURFAGS, or because them personally liking the movie is somehow going to embolden or enable furries.

Are there idiots who have a similar dilemma about liking Star Trek or anime?

Saw this lovely little tech-related video last week but forgot to post it. Pretty interesting, albeit not too deep in the tech. I would LOVE if the Blu-Ray release had an in depth technial featurette or especially a commentary track by the developers.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zaqmn55w4IA

I was right that XGen (the tech I'm using to add fur to my models) was used by the film. However, the vid seems to indicate it was specificly for populating foliage on trees (X Gen has many uses beyond hair and fur.) It is not exactly clear whether the custom fur shader they mentioned was applied to XGen-generated splines for fur or if the shader was responsible for both. Neat, tho!

I wasn't sure if it should go in here or in the Zoophobia thread, but the artist for Zoophobia (Vivienne Medrano) drew some really cute fanart for this film:

On another note, I went to see the movie again with my mom. She didn't know I've seen it and I didn't want her to know I've seen it. So we went to the movies and had a blast. Still a great film.

It's great to see Vivienne geeking out on ZT, she does some amazing work.  But remember, it's ok for rabbits to call other rabbits 'cute', but when other animals do it.... :P

Just finished seeing the movie. Really enjoyed it :3 Was kinda surprised it was packed in there

One of the kids next to me was howling along with the wolves during the howling scene. He'll be a furry in no time :V

Nice!  2016 is going to be a good year for furries. >:3

There was like five other people in the theatre when I saw it... but then again most kids were probably asleep and I don't think many adults would stay up past midnight to watch a children's movie on opening night. :P

And more "should I come out as a furry?" threads :P

Oh yeah my showing was at 1:20pm, so fairly early in the day

The beast movie has legs.  Week three and ZT is still #1 at the box office, granted the competition was pretty weak.  The interesting take away from the weekend is that ZT ticket sales have been dropping off slower than normal, proving that this 'furry' movie has broad appeal.  It will be interesting to see how long this run lasts.  Who would have guessed?

Working at a theatre over the weekend, I can confirm Zootopia still sells out in like two seconds. I honestly think I turned more people away than sold actual tickets.

As someone who also works at a theater, I can definitely confirm this. I love Zootopia, but I don't love cleaning up after it. Kids always make big messes, so you can imagine what it's like cleaning.

I want a sequel. Or a TV series. Something. They built such an interesting world and so many likeable characters.

On the downside... The pacing was off here and there and the parts with Shakira felt really out of place. Did she win Disney's YCH or something?

I was wondering the same thing. I mean, she wasn't bad, it just didn't make any sense for her to be there. I kept expecting there to be some kind of plot twist, like that she was involved in the conspiracy somehow or something, but no...........

Zootopia is a really cool movie and deserves your monies, so don't be a dick and pirate it.

That is all...

Agreed, if we want more of these you need to support the movie makers.  So go see it again and buy some stuff.

This should be a very interesting weekend for Zootopia.  Considering how not kid friendly BvS is and the crappy reviews it's getting (30% on Rotten Tomatoes), I'd guess ZT will have another better than expected weekend.

Hahaha, called it!

"Could 'Zootopia 2' center around Judy and Nick's growing romantic feelings for each other, but fearing the social stigma of being a "interspecies" relationship?"

The fact that the producers are already talking ZT2 is freaking excellent!  It's amazing how easily the media is tossing around terms like "interspecies relationship" these days.

Saw the movie today. Figured that after almost a month the theater wouldn't be packed with kids, but I was wrong. At least their parents were quick to shush or take em out of the theater, so it wasn't all that bad. And at least they laughed, unlike the Spongebob movie I saw last year. Room full of kids; no laughter. Was creepy.

Anyhow, movie is good. I had a blast with it on the whole, and like everyone said: IT IS GORGEOUS!

Loved the two lead characters and the world. Enjoyed the plot as a buddy cop flick. I had some issues with how fast things moved and how coincidental some plot points came off as, but not enough to spoil my enjoyment.

I enjoyed the animal racism, even if as an idea it's not new. They mostly did it well, moreso with Nick and foxes than with Judy as a rabbit though. The "follow your dreams" message is nice, but I really appreciated Judy's dreams being not as great in reality as they were in her head. Welcome to life!

Good flick. Will probably buy when out on Blu Ray.

Congratulations @Conker you have earned the "I watched Zootopia as a furry" badge. You have performed your civic duty as a furry :P

I'm a sucker for animated flicks, so I'd have seen it regardless.

I liked the movie a lot. Probably a 9/10.

One of the things that pissed me off is that while looking at furry fanart of the characters before I had seen it, someone in the comments spoiled something.

About Bellwether. It was kinda vague but still, mentioned enough about her character that I knew how it was going to end. Furries ruin everything.

Still, even with that spoiler I was able to look for foreshadowing. I noticed how Bellwether hovered around Judy a lot, and seemed to pop up in just the right place. And then, when the museum scene appeared, I was like "I bet this is when...." and I was right.

BTW, Should I continue to be vague about this? Or should this be a "I saw the movie" thread and spoilers are okay in the thread now?

I have to admit, I am not a huge fan of "Try Everything". At all. When she says try everything, is that going to be the new YOLO? Should I try base jumping without a parachute? That's trying everything. Should I try russian roulette? That's trying everything. There's supposed to be a message in that song and it just sounds repetitive.

If you are a furry and have not seen this movie yet, you are hereby kicked out of the fandom.  So saith me.  Unleash the spoilers!

In any case, the actual spoiler was:

Spoiler

Someone said something about Bellwether's downfall, and I had a feeling that meant she might be the villain or at least an accomplice or victim. I think I saw someone else say something about her going bad or something. So when she popped up in the museum I knew what was going down.

Also, what exactly do the predators eat? We see Nick eating blueberries, sure, but is that it? Are all predators vegetarians?

And, where exactly are other animals? It's mentioned in the movie that Zootopia is a city for mammals, and you only see mammals. My idea is that much in the same way humans were the only ones to evolve to use tools and build things, in this universe only mammals evolved enough to think, and build, and invent. Birds and lizards are still stupid. And it's possible that predators still eat those lesser animals.

Also, who's the mayor of Zootopia now? At the end it looked like Lionheart was still in prison.

I've wondered about some of this stuff too. It's kind of the big problem with working with talking animal people. How do you fill the world up with wildlife, and what does everyone eat?

It's to this day my big problem with Redwall, since some animals can talk and others can't for plot reasons.
