What do you think could possibly bring furries into the mainstream?

Additionally, why would anyone want furries to be mainstream? A massive shit fit was thrown on FA when the IMVU buyout was brought to the attention of the community (a very delayed notice) because a large group of people felt that the company was intruding on furries and our niche corner, as though the company was going to force the fandom into the mainstream by capitalizing on the artists' market. There are no big corporations in the fandom, only small to medium sized businesses which cater to the fandom. The fear was that IMVU would directly or indirectly encourage large companies to come into the fandom, and produce work at lower prices that artists cannot compete with.

The other fear was that IMVU would seize the rights of all uploaded and future uploaded content.

In regards to my first paragraph and to the subject of this thread: why in the fuck would you want to make the fandom mainstream? That allows for everything I stated in the first paragraph to happen, because there are companies out there that will cater to the porn aspect. Sex sells, and they don't care what they're shitting out as long as it's not illegal. As was said earlier regarding Steampunk being mainstream, look at the state of it now. It's all mass produced bullshit that you can find in any dept store, especially at Halloween. It's over inflated, it's over used, and the only people you see flaunting it outside of a con (in which the wearers usually have put a lot into the outfit itself and took the time and money to create or commission their pieces) are try hard fuckwits like Steam Powered Giraffes. Do you really want the fandom turning into a circus act like that band?

idk how people thought that would happen just because IMVU bought the site. I didn't even think IMVU is that popular anymore.

though I honestly don't think it would have that much of an affect on the fandom. there would just be more people in the fandom and maybe some generic commercialized stuff like shirts and maybe accessories but it's actually kind of hard to mass produce stuff in this fandom because a lot of it is really specific to its members unlike Steampunk which is a broad concept. and sure sex sells but what company would jump at the opportunity to mass produce furry sex toys or porn and not be regarded as creepy when people still see Bad Dragon as taboo

and to be fair, MLP and anime are pretty mainstream fandoms too and there's still a huge market for artists so I doubt people would lose their livelihood

I suppose it was seen as a possible doorway to all that. I kind of thought similar to that in the beginning, mostly because why the fuck would IMVU have a remote interest in a demographic that doesn't, for the most part, care about them? I suppose maybe an underlying intent (aside from the ad whoring) could be to eventually compete with Second Life for moar furreh monies, since SL is apparently very open to modifying characters (and everyone has seen those dumb as fuck screenshots of someone's SL furry character mod, you know, the ones they upload into a main gallery as a priceless work of screenshitshot visual art).

I do agree that it could be hard to mass produce things for furries, because, as you said, it's all very personal. You have generic characters that could be catered to, particularly the ones that lack any sort of differentiating features from whatever the original inspiration is.

As far as the porn goes, I really wouldn't past some jack off company to entertain the idea, or a start up to implement it. I don't know how successful it would be, given it's highly specialized and the group isn't large like you know, the non furry group. If a company did do furry shit to cater to furfaggios, they'd be wise in not prioritizing it and instead have a variety of jack off material.

Also, isn't the head of BD (or former head...someone with that company) a convicted rapist or something? That shit is creepy in itself, and then throw in the furry dildos, which are modeled after animal (real or fictional) cocks, or vagoos.

I can't see furry being a mainstream thing anytime soon, largely due to the "OH MAI GAWD ANIMAL FUQQERS!" "EW SEXUAL DEVIANTS" "EW U HAB SEX IN THAT SUIT GO WASH YOURSELF" "I'M A FOX IN A HOOMAN BODY YIFF ME I'M QUIRKY" shit.

Reading the comments of this topic has caused me to loose faith on both furries and non-furries. I said I am a closet furry and with comments like  these I would like to remain as one while comments like these linger around. But what can I do? I can only mull ideas with my fellows in here.

I wouldn't know. it wouldn't surprise me but it hasn't really been brought to public attention like it was with Zaush so..yeah. I don't even know who runs BD. is it Narse or does he just do the art?

but I think if someone really wanted to cater to the perverts in the fandom the closest they could get to catering to furries is with those hoods and tails people use for pet play. so I guess it wouldn't be too hard to imagine horse hoods or fox tail butt plugs. but that's stretching it I think

toys are expensive anyway :/

:U You better damn well incorporate that alien quote into your signature for like 3mins so I can laugh, for it is glorious.

TBH I haven't been on any of the 'Tonygate' shit, but rather laughing at what others read to me. I just grab some popcorn and enjoy the shitstorm from behind bulletproof glass.

Ohhhh but my dear, there's already fox tail butt plugs. Wolf ones as well. UNLEASH YOUR INNER WOLFABOO WITH THIS BRAND NEW slightly used WOOF TAIL ANUS PLUGGER. GR8 FOR SEXY YAFF TIME.

And I'm pretty sure Narse just does/did the art? And ew...ewwww... Allow me to go bathe in corrosive acid to cleanse myself.

Honestly? I think furries will always be one of those outlying fandoms. Unless you're a mascot for a company or sports team, most people look at people in fursuits and thing "eww you like to have sex with animals" or some shit. They don't take the time to see what we're actually about because it's too close (in their minds) to bestiality. Considering I highly doubt public opinion of bestiality will ever change, I don't see people growing the ability to differentiate between those actually into bestiality and those who just play a character.

Furries will never be mainstream but I'll still run around in a fursuit!

Fureies are still getting hung up on that Tony thr Tiger thing, thinking he's "fursecuting" them. That's the biggest reason people hate furries. It's that they make you uncomfortable with public displays of inappropriate behavior, and then they claim you're oppressing them when you tell them stop or go away.

And I don't see this trend stopping anytime soon. Meanwhile, the sensible furries (there ARE some out there, it's true) continue to lose brain cells whenever they hear about whatever stupid shit happens in the fandom.

Just wait. At the Zootopia screenings, somewhere in some theater, two furfags will be having sex. Maybe even in suit. With kids around. If that got into the news, I'd expect some cons to not exist anymore.

The only direction for this fandom to go is down.

If by mainstream, we're referring to a well-established theme in art and literature, then furries have been mainstream for ages. In fact, they may have been part of the human narrative as long as there have been modern humans. There's just something about our psyche that finds it amusing to project onto other animals and create fanciful hybrids.

If you're talking about the porn, however, I doubt that will ever be mainstream. In fact, I would even be surprised if human porn becomes mainstream. Is it common? Sure, but it's often regarded as lowest common denominator stuff at best and perversion at worst.

I doubt everyone will like furries or that the fandom will become extremely popular in and of itself. It's like enjoying jazz music or having a favorite color. What we'll likely see is anthropomorphic animals continuing to appear in various media, gaining attention for things like plot and artistic talent rather than for the fact that they're animal-people.
