In reality, though, the hourglass is filled with water, and the sand is actually tiny plastic beads

Wrecker
It would be something to be the poor bastard that made the first hour glass... Fill it, nope too fast, not enough sand... Fill it, nope too slow, too much sand... Fill it, damn that was close, still too much sand... Fill it, that was like 5 minutes, took way too much sand out... etc. etc. etc. etc.
MalletFace
I would be so scared of breaking that thing. Not only do you have beads everywhere - you have water to clean, too. 7 hours ago, Wrecker said: It would be something to be the poor bastard that made the first hour glass... The cool thing about an hourglass is that - if the proper sand is used - the rate the sand moves through the neck is pretty consistent. Because of that, you can send some sand through the glass, measure how much time it takes that sand to make it through, and use proportionality to determine how much sand you need to make it last the length of time you want it to. If you want to design an hourglass for a really short time, though, you'll need to know the rate at which sand flows through the neck you want to make and some cone and triangle formulas. You should never have to fill your glass more than twice. Our ancestors were pretty observant and intelligent people.
