I don't sympathise at all with the whole 'this site's security has a vulnerability, therefore I am entitled to attack it' ethos.

But you know, it's unfortunate that a lot of intelligent people have very warped notions about how they should treat strangers. I know a very intelligent woman who is much smarter than me... who steals avocados from shops in protest because she thinks the shop charges too much for them, for example.

I can sympathize a bit with artists who are pretty much forced to be there, because it's their only artistic means of supporting themself.

But this is nothing new for FA, and people should expect this from them by now. I don't have any sympathy for the site itself, for certain.
It's a bit like continuing to use an online payment services site that gets hacked every other week.
"Oh gee! Oh my! How did this happen! What assholes are responsible for this? What an outrage!"

There's only so many times you can go "Uh, sure, yeah. That sounds kind of shitty." before the responsibility of continuing to use that incompetent service falls on the shoulder of the user, themself.

Also because it's much less important than a payment services site.

Edit, I should probably also add that my University regularly gets hacked. It happens almost every month, because it's a wealthy and well known University, so it represents a desirable target for criminals. Last year a Russian group infiltrated the system and began stealing people's bank account details, for example.

This issue of continual DDOS and hack attacks is wider than just esoteric internet websites and it affects institutions with strong security too, when the criminals are determined enough to continually try again.

There's a difference between hacking a service to illegally get monetary gain from it and hacking a service to show the users that the site is not secure.
I find it justified, considering how many times FA has been warned about this and has just banned the person reporting it.

Everyone should have just jumped ship when FA's entire database got downloaded. Why they keep using this garbage is beyond me.

I think that it is ironic that esoteric websites which get hacked to 'teach them a lesson' would probably hardly get hacked at all without these 'moralising' busy bodies.

It would sort of be like protestors parking all their cars on the high-way to prove how vulnerable the roads are too being blocked...they are actually the source of the problem they claim they want to prevent.

Ohio State has won the past... what... 6 or more times our team has played them? Plus, we were in the lead for most of the game. Try being calm when the results of the game were up for grabs until the last second. Losing during the entire span of the game is less painful.

Plus their team has won TOO Much. It's gotten to the point where their fans rub it in other people's faces. They brag. They boast. It's about time a team with that much arrogance gets knocked down a notch. 

And let's face it. Had this been a massive rivalry in Soccer football in Europe or Latin America, half the city would be on fire now, police cars would be burning, and there would be a death toll. My comment was meant in jest more than anything else; you really don't have to justify your emotional investment in football to me.

This student debt stuff is my main reason for not going to university for a engineering degree, knowing that eventually getting a HNC lets you use the term incorporated which most degree hating, millennial hating employers should accept.

So I'm looking at these maps this other guy made... all of them look visually impressive with highly intricate brushwork and detailing...

 

...so, what's the problem?

The detailing descends into the realm of absurdity.

 

Like, he's cut actual brushwork out of all these textures so that the ridges and other details normally represented solely by the texture are actual physical details. More brushes = more polygons for the game to render.

 

"Wait, slow down Victor, what the fuck are brushes?" Half-Life maps are built up out of 3D geometric prisms (cubes, pyramids, etc) that fit together to form the map. These are called 'brushes'.

 

Anyway, I mentioned in another post something called "r_speeds". This is an ingame variable that, when set to 1, overlays various renderer information that's basically used to measure the 'efficiency' of the map you've made. The most important metric is "w_poly", the amount of level polygons the game is drawing in that specific frame. The recommended 'limit' for w_poly has always been around 1000, any higher and people with toasters (i.e. most people who still actively play HL1) will have trouble with your map.

Maybe I'm just old-fashioned but I try to adhere to this limit still, which is why a lot of my maps seem 'boxy' or 'low-poly' and rely a lot more on the textures for intricate details.

This other guy, though, just doesn't give even the smallest iota of a shit about that and just goes apeshit with pointless details (he's just about at the point where he's carving out each individual plank of wood in a crate) and it's making his r_speeds shoot up way past 3000 in at least one part of evey one of his maps (he released one that is jammed with so much shit the game actively complains, throwing the "too many entities in visible packet list" error -- which means your game is dangerously close to flat out crashing to desktop from having too much shit going on). Overall it just seems really sloppy.

It all just kind of irks me for some reason; I take my time and go through and test all the shit I can think of, try to stick within classic limits to make sure everyone can run it, painstakingly align a lot of my textures by hand, etc. and this other guy just flings shit everywhere haphazardly and can't even keep a consistent theme in his maps (several of his maps have random doctor's office waiting room shit right next door to an open pit full of glowing flesh-eating radioactive chemicals) and he seems to be getting a hell of a lot more attention than me.

I guess I'm just jealous, but at the same time it also reminds me of the dumb ridiculous shit I used to make too, that I now look back on with disdain...

Back 10 years ago when I was learning how to do maps for the original Unreal Tournament, which is probably around the same level of technology and poly count as HL, most people designed maps that had the same amount of texture and detail as UT2004 maps... which was insane. The maps were damn beautiful though.

And when I started designing I was designing around the level the game was designed for, because I was just starting out. When I showed my half-finished maps to those communities and advice, I had a lot of people bash me. "It's not detailed enough." "You're a noob." "Never show your first maps off." "That's terrible." "Needs to be all high detailed and shit like ours." Had my computer at the time not been stolen in a break in, I might have quit anyway. I get that your first work will always be sloppy, it's like artwork, you'll draw stick figures before good stuff. But I'm a stickler for detail and I felt I was progressing well. So I think I understand.

I'm not new though, I've been puttering around with Hammer for at least a decade. I was more just musing on how this guy is going so absolutely apeshit with pointless details that in some cases it actually hinders movement and in other cases it comes dangerously close to breaking the game.

True. What I meant was most of the people in the UT1 community I was in were obsessed with details and making their maps as detailed, high rez, and like UT2k3/4 as possible. Most of their complaints on mine seemed that they weren't detailed enough. Much like this guy.
