The usual: Dinsey, Don Bluth, Pokémon, Digimon, some other movies like Cats Don't Dance and that furry David Copperfield adaption, and an affinity for animals in general.

And then I discovered the actual fandom itself through webcomics and the inevitable porn.

My interest in mythical creatures, I stumbled across anthro artwork while looking up art of mythical creatures 8-10 years ago, and found it even more interesting that what I was originally looking for.

Animaniacs. That's what got me to look into furries.

Wasn't all that impressed, but then I found old FaF. Shit made me laugh. I think I read threads there for about 6 months (talking to people was scary for me back then.)

That's all it was, though. A laugh.

Then I joined. I am now a gay furfag that likes animal dicks.

Hummm, the Sonic SatAm cartoon (the good one), Swat kats, thundercats, the star fox games, crash bandicoot, and my mother, for indulging in my fascination with all of these things and buying me absolutely everything.

Although given some of her comments later in life she might have done it on purpose, dunno O.o

Early on, in a subconscious way: Looney Tunes, Tiny Toons, Danger Mouse, TMNTs, growing up in a very remote area with a lot of wilderness.

Later on: Finding something to counterbalance my tendency towards seriousness & melancholy, and watching fursuiters on the 'Subservient Time' section of the Funday Pawpet Show. I think it was when I saw Vincent the wolf, that I was sold on the idea.

Probably role playing?

Somehow I got into role playing, lord knows how, at a very young age. Then I got into wolf role playing (I was/am a proud wolfaboo tbh). From there I got into drawing more, and found a Lion King art site, which I was a part of for several years. Joined deviantArt at some point, and it's all been downhill from there xD

You know, when discussing this with a friend and mentioning the fact that so many gays are in the fandom he made a good point. Furry art might be used as a proxy, since people are conditioned by society and sexual thoughts that go against its norm are generally inhibited by the frontal lobe. In this way, there is a displacement from the scenario originally imagined far enough away it doesn't get inhibited the same way. I was talking to another fried about a transformation fetish, which I understood from a dom sub perspective but scenarios where there is just TF itself and not coercion from a dominant character led me to believe this could be yet another presentation. BDSM itself probably falls into this category, too. People are turned on by aggression, however any sexual feelings that spawn from it are them inhibited by the temporal lobe. This has been shown in people with lesions to this area, or with related disorders affecting it, where an abnormally high percent commit sexual crimes related to aggression (pedophilia also falls into this same boat). In an experiment, that group lacked the inhibition that generally follows thoughts of this nature when shown images and videos depicting aggressive acts, versus the control group.

-Pretty much all the old furry cartoons and movies from the 90s and early 2000s you can think of. I got to watch an awful lot of videos as a kid.
-World of Warcraft
-Smuts
-Even more smuts

In that order, too. From childhood, to early teens, to later teens, to this very day! Oh, how inspiring it all has been~

Becoming a furry is like a subtle indoctrination, like in mass effect. You barely notice it at first, like something at the edge of your vision and you think you can fight it.

It all began when I was watching YouTube videos and there were cringey little people in cute animals suits running around having fun... it looked like a lot of fun. This piqued my curiousity and I had to delve further into it, what were these little animal people? Furries. I couldn't resist but go look more up about them. Oh boy it looks like they have fun little conventions with tonnes of people dressed up as animals, this too looks like awesome fun and it's actually kinda cool. We find more art... oh they create them themselves... look how amazing they are and cute.

This is where we start enjoying the art and continue to look at it at an increasing rate, we didn't know it yet, but it was too late to resist the process. Eventually we wanted to meet other animal people and joined a forum of manimals, it went offline :c. But some nice fellow that I had added on steam brought me here and it has been constantly downhill from there.

Thank you for reading my story, if you are reading this, it's surely too late. So, I blame YouTube.

I literally just saw some cool artwork in the 'anthro' section of DeviantArt once and thought it looked really cool. I think it had something to do with furry versions of the virtual Gorillaz characters.

(also mod upd8 since the guys didn't reply, hid all the egregious derailing posts. continue)

Also, Beast from beautify in the beast gave me weird feelings as a kid.

Lol nothing has "made" me furry because I was born furry. So there is nothing I can blame for making me furry.

I really started seeing myself as an animal starting in Kindergarten and 1st grade. So its always been there. I guess i'd be considered a "true furry" without any sort of exposure to "it made me a furry" material.

eehh I ain't really much of a furry. I do like the idea of anthropomorphic animals as characters but don't really identify with a particular species.

I guess what got me into this community was the people. I wanted a place to talk to folks that wasn't tumblr or some stupid avatar site aimed at teenage girls. People in this community, on this site at least, feel a little more down to earth and life experienced than some of the ridiculous sparkle fairies I've found on other sites. The fact that they're all a bunch of hairy, yiffing, man-beasts is kind of just coincidental. Yet in spite of my lack of overall furriness I keep feeling at least a little drawn to furries and their art and overall culture.

i'm not no stinkin' furry.

i always liked was obsessed with animals as a kid.  i also constantly watched cartoons, which were full of anthro characters.  when i had assignments that asked me to draw people/characters in kindergarten, i drew anthros.  go figure.  aside from a few things where it was required, i didn't really draw humans until about 7th grade.

Yes for some there is not a choice. It is an identity expression. I could never cease being furry. For me it is sort of like a culture, I could never be happy in a relationship with a non-furry. This could also explain why I have more "extreme" views than others on certain aspects of the fandom.

To be fair, I saw the err "signs" early on so who the fuck knows.

Either way treating it like a serious "identity" like being gay or something is fucking retarded.

I dont treat it like an serious identity, perhaps I worded it wrong, I just enjoy the artwork and creativity and I enjoy going to conventions and interacting with new people and looking at all the interesting fursuits. I don't even look at "furry pornography" really. I just enjoy making new friends with similar interests.

But earlier you were treating it like a serious identity with the whole "I was born this way" thing.

I was merely being hyperbolic to say that there wasn't a series of tv shows that could "make" someone be furry. You would have had to be interested in stuff related to the fandom beforehand.

No. But saying it's"retarded" shows that you probably lack a psych degree =p

People aren't born gay, either. This has been shown countless times with homozygous twins. It isn't even a question anymore. That doesn't mean people can't have influences early on and be imprinted that way. For me and the whole furry thing it was mostly something that happened with a stuffed animal when I was under two years old.
