What is a furry "lifestyle" anyway?

I've been in the fandom for 10 years and I still don't know what the hell a furry lifestyle is supposed to be. Is it the people who claim putting on fursuits is like the way to Nirvana by becoming their fursona or some crap?

I know there are a lot of really obsessed people in this fandom, but why don't we see "anime lifestylers" or "Klingon lifestylers"? Why does furry have to have the weird new-agey nonsense? I just don't get it. Is it just a bunch of people trying to hide the fact they have 20 gigs of foxboi poontang on their computer?

Furry Lifestyler (noun)

People who go too far with being a furry and decide it's a part of who they are

Symptoms of furry lifestylers include, but are not limited to:

1. Only dating other furries
2. Owning one or multiple fursuits
3. Inappropriately wearing tails in public
4. Attending every furmeet or con that their wallet will allow
5. Spending money needed for food on porn commissions

How about people who think showing up in fursuit alone without a handler at a playground isn't creepy?

I'm doing it all wrong then.

A mental disease.

I'm pretty sure that's what got me into the fandom.

I have run into people who I believe only have furry in their lives. It's like they're the saddest, most boring people in the world with no passions in their lives. And they are viciously vocal about them being offended by the weirdest, most banal things.

I even met one furry who got upset about me asking *any* questions about foxes and told me foxes were "sacred" to them and then proceeded to tell me that their partner changing their fursona appearance was some spiritual event. Me engaging in furry a different way, not taking suits seriously deeply offended them.

I mean I have no issue with people's spiritual beliefs (unless it harms people), but the thing that got me was their inability to accept casual participation in the fandom. That offended me.

I think you really have these types of people in any fandom, the type of people for whom the fandom becomes their entire life, the furry "lifestylers" are just more visible than these other groups.

You have the weaboos with their "waifu" body pillows who cosplay at every anime convention, and you have the Star Wars/Trek geeks who will debate ship schematics and statistics, as well as attempt mathematical calculations based off of the visuals in the movies/shows to calculate weapon power etc.

I myself have experience with this in the Star Wars fandom. Someone who was new at my local gamestore turned out to be a fan of the Star wars Expanded Universe, so we began discussing the novels, but he very quickly began ranting at me about his own personal work on trying to local the Star Wars galaxy in real life (through comparing supernovas in Star wars and real life or something) for a good 5 minutes, and kept talking despite repeated attempts on my part to politely end the conversation (even proudly telling me he had sent a letter to the author of one of the Star wars novels about his work, as if it was some secret the author had hidden in his book).

So, really, i think these types of people exist in every fandom, the exact way in which their obsessiveness is expressed is simply different in each group.

@OsrikIt's the difference between reading Tolkien to see the beauty behind the ugliness in the real world and reading Tolkien to escape the ugliness for imagined beauty. One makes you a more whole person, the other leaves you empty.

I think furries need to learn to laugh about the ridiculousness of the fandom and not get uppity and offended when someone thinks x thing is weird. We are talking about talking animal people. Not funerary rites.

Furry lifestylers are those people that have no real friends, so they dive deep into the pits of furry hell to try and find themselves. It is a very sad place full of weird fetish porn and murrsuits. Once you fall into this abyss, it is very difficult to climb out. So beware, lest you go too far.

Don't forget the all white people claiming to have spirit totem animals or the people who think they're actually dragons.

That's odd, I found that reading Tolkien just made me sleepy and bored. But I've had this effect with other authors.

The main thing I see wrong is that he's in the 'Priority Seating' area of the bus. But maybe it's crowded, or he has a bad foot!

I don't see an issue with that.

Priority seating simply means if you see a pregnant lady come onto the bus or something, you're obligated to offer them you seat. Not "don't sit here unless you're about to like die".

When you think this guy is doing nothing wrong and should be allowed to do what he does and say he is a furry like the rest of us...you have issues

That guy is going to make anything look ridiculous he comes in contact with. Trust me, it's best to keep far away from him at all times. Also, I think he might be... RETARDED :o

See, this is why you shouldn't be too nice to people. People like that are MEANT to be laughed at. If you are that group who welcomes everybody, get used to people like that. That is your future :V

The two problems here are context and attractiveness. He's not in a furry place, so that's strange. Were he in anthrocon or something, he'd just be one of many. He's also not attractive, which means he can't pull off the ears or tail.

Pretty people of any sex can get away with more.

Okay the third problem is the puppet. I can't argue that one away.

I think a lot of these furries lack theory of mind. They are incapable of seeing how other people may view their behavior. They are rebellious "fuck the man!", and they think they can wear a rubber murrsuit in public and prance around because "they aren't hurting anyone". They're hurting the fandom. And then when you tell them they're being stupid, they go all tumblr on you and say you're bigoted or self-loathing or some dumb shit. "There are many ways to do furry!" They say...but of course only their way is right. Which includes bullshit new age spiritualism and a hefty dose of socially inept escapism.

I think it's possible, yeah. You have to have enough attitude to pull it off too, but sure.

Even if someone is attractive they aren't going to make an ugly outfit look great. Most ear and tail combinations look awful, case in point above. They don't match, and even if they did they'd still look awful. That's one thing I've noticed with ears and tails. I used to wear shit like that around Tampa all the time, but I got stuff that looked good and wore it with baggy clothes so you didn't see where the tail is attached and all of that.

Unfortunately I lost then when I was arrested wearing them one time.

This is getting interesting.

naw you'd just look like a sperg

I don't care who you are, you CANNOT pull of wearing a tail or something in public. Ears maybe if it's like attached to a beanie or something, but never a tail.

Damn, if I only kept pictures of myself x3

You can definitely pull it off and I've seen it done plenty of times by people who aren't even furries. The barrette looks dumb, especially on him, but if you have long enough hair it can be covered.

Ever notice how otherkin only have the typical popular species as spirit animals? They never have frogs, fish, platypuses, zebras, etc.
