Oh fuck the government banned books promoting moderate forms of Islam last week and today a minister say that atheists should be hunted down.

*misanthropy intensifies*

So I'm guessing you're either moderate or an atheist? If so, good luck out there.

Well, last weekend I went to an anime con locals are comparing to Dash-con. It is a con that's been going on for nearly a decade, but had a change of management some time ago and perhaps they don't know what they're doing.

The first indication something was up was that the con felt empty, not only on Friday but even Saturday. Normally the con had 250-500 people. I heard an estimate of about 100 people showed up.  The second indication that something was wrong was the angry crowd of people at registration. After hovering around them I found out they were vendors that wanted refunds, because they were charged $300 to get in and promised 500-1000 people would show up, and less than 100 were there and they were not able to break even, or even turn a proft. I don't know if they got refunds but it sounded like they were able to get something back.

Also, rumor has it that most of the staff quit on Friday, leaving a few staff members and volunteers, and some of the maids in the maid cafe (who were a different group) were doing panels.

So, why did this con fail so hard? First off, it had moved from its old small hotel to a larger hotel, which happened to be the same hotel that booted out a popular convention earlier this year. The guy at registration told me he wanted to move to a bigger hotel to encourage more people to show up but might have jumped the gun or chosen too big of a hotel, not to mention local resentment of said hotel which probably caused a lot of people to boycott that hotel. The con organizers should not have told the vendors that 1000 people would show up when previous cons were 500 at most, and not charged $300 a booth. Second thing that happened was there was another anime event in the area which siphoned a lot of people away. Both events have been blaming each other on social media for being the same weekend, but I think neither knew of the other's existence and the con's always been the first week of Aug. I know for a fact the con staff went to the other event to lure people to the con with half-off or bogo badges, which is a big no-no.

In any case, I enjoyed myself and there were quite a few panels that went off without a hitch. Bought some stuff in the dealer's stuff to help out the dealers. Rave was enjoyable. Both voice actor GOHs showed up and tried their best. Plus, people complaining about the con being $40 for a weekend, which I've been at sci-fi cons that had 100-200 people and paid $50+ for the weekend when there were ONLY 3 day badges. I hope the con can go back to being fun again like it's been in the past but I think it took too great of a hit with its reputation locally. I am sad about this.

I know there are moderate muslims out there and I wonder why more radical forms are taking control. I don't entirely think it's religion but rather populism and authoritarianism which have both become popular lately. "We're gonna strengthen our government stranglehold and crouch it in religious terms." If you look at even non-Muslim countries like Poland, Philippines, and the like, strong-fisted government seems to be popular nowadays, and fuck freedom.

So what's the deal with Telegram? Is it like Whatsapp, iMessage etc. but the app of choice for most furs? Is there a Phoenixed Telegram group chat?

I'd compare it to Discord/Skype more than anything else, but pretty much. There's nothing furry about it, but for some mysterious reason the only users I know are furries

I'd guess it's because it has custom stickers and the FA-going types enjoy commissioning sticker images of their OCs and stuff

The only people I know using it are furries, too. I've never made one though, considering the only 'other' furs I actually interact with are you guys

Such a problem you say it twice!
There's just too many coffee cups in my house.
Like, a shit ton that no one ever uses in this cabinet.
I want to get rid of some of them.
Y'know, the ones that have been sitting back there for years. Generic, boring coffee cups. Because when I put dishes away I can't put all the coffee cups that get used away.

It's like discord, but with stickers and pictures of people's dicks.

You think I'm exaggerating, too. Over half the furry chats I've been in on Telegram has just been a bunch of horny guys posting gay porn and comparing dick size. I ended up purging the worst offenders pretty quickly. With fire and nuclear bombardment.

I think I hit holy grain of furry chats then in which we share porn, talk music (most of the people in the group are surprisingly knowledgeable), occasionally talk politics, and just banter and have a good time. No dick pics or anything. No RL pictures at all in this chat.

Any medically-inclined friends on here know what can be attributed to fatigue?

My work always leaves me feeling drained as it is quite physical, but I'd feel fatigued after going into uni for a single lecture and being sat at a desk all day. My diet has gotten poor lately, which could be the cause, but I don't know for sure.

Haven't posted here or nosed about in a while but thought I'd nose in again...went through a pretty serious bout of depression, gets harder, every time.

But thought maybe seeing some familiar faces would help, vs. hiding away. And so have posted here and there, to see what's going on...

In just one week among future educators I've heard so many slurs and other hurtful things that I never really thought were so prevalent among future educators.

"I done Jewed that up"
"I'm not racist, but there's a difference between a n*****r and a n***a just like there's a difference between a white guy and a honky"
"I just made myself look like a faggot"
"What do you guys look for in a perfect roommate?" *across the room* "Not gay"

I mean I guess I see why things like bullying and depression are so poorly handled in education; these fuckers help or are sympathetic to the shitheads.

My principal was homophobic, transphobic, and racist in high school but I thought she was just the oddball.

Do I really belong in education? How much good can I even do when the people the kids are supposed to go to are like this? How much good can I do if my coworkers might try to get me fired because I'm not like them?

Jesus Christ.

I always thought the educators would be some of the more open and tolerant people, but perhaps not.

You would think.

The worst part is that there are a few gay and Jewish future educators in the program I am in and a few future educators of color.

And they only say these things in front of us if they don't know that one of these people is around them. So they are just trying to feign empathy and respect to benefit socially with minority groups and then turn right the fuck around and shit on them because it won't hurt them at all. This isn't abnormal at all around here, so I have no idea why I thought teachers would be different.

On a more positive note, there are future educators here that are quite opposite. They are mostly of those minorities, but who needs allies when you have will?

EDIT: I take back my happy moment:

Also Panera Bread gave me a 2nd free birthday pastry (cookie for me) because they forgot to count the first one. Yeah for getting older? (I don't know if I should be happy about it or not)

You know, Discord really just stormed the castle and took the fuck over. They literally just came in out of nowhere and said "get off Skype and Teamspeak. we're better lol". And everyone did exactly that.
NO ONE is using Skype and TeamSpeak these days. lmao

good

I got the impression a lot of people were already waiting for a replacement to skype by the time discord showed up. I certainly was. It was starting to remind me of what msn messenger became before they gave up on it.

Still use teamspeak for some games though. Discord makes a far better chat room but so far it's been kinda unreliable for audio in my experience. With TS we basically just install it and it works.

I get that Skype was shit because it was a massive RAM hog and slow to start even for fast PCs, but what was wrong with TeamSpeak? Apparently that was actually good for a long time, did it shit the bed recently or something?

TeamSpeak was a dated clumsy interface that you had to pay to have just one server.
Discord is a clean, intuitive modern interface that isn't a hassle to find and join friend servers and you can make/join tons of servers absolutely free.
TeamSpeak also doesn't let you embed gifs and videos and shit which you can choose to allow Discord to do among a few other things that made TS super painful to use in my experience.

But the main thing is that Discord is totally free if you don't want Nitro for a way smoother, updated, seamless service with more features.

Discord is pretty cool yeah, its the only thing I use now that isn't Steam. I never used Teamspeak except for one time cos I was roped into it, but I remember it being hot shit several years ago

Speaking of Discord, running a large server on it has made me realize that moderation isn't all its cracked up to be. Sure, you have personal control over how your own server is run, but at the same time, you've gotta deal with the different interests of different people on what they want the server to be, complaints, etc.

Its frustrating because I want to make sure I make everyone happy while moderating, but I've come to realize that that's extremely hard to do. That almost always someone is going to be upset at something you do. And that sucks.
