Going Too Far For The Sake Of Cosplay

So, Anime North is two months away and I'm doing a 'sorta' original cosplay based on the whole 'Girl with guns' trope.  Putting together a school girl uniform with various tactical gear.  I have a MICH 2000 helmet with cat ears on it.  The rifle will have a cute moe type cellphone dangle hanging near the barrel.  But while it's the 'trope' it's all original.  I have decided to go through the effort of coming up with a whole backstory and scenario, something about a 'Japanese Tactical High School' operating on a JSDF base where students learn warfare because.. Because that's dumb enough to sound like a real manga or anime basically.

But see, being a well employed individual with no dependents, zero consumer debt and less than $5000 in student debt, I decided I wasn't going far enough.  I am going to design an entire custom school logo/military unit shoulder patch and get it properly embroidered by a place that produces patches.  But this isn't enough.  I want people to to ask me 'What are you cosplaying as' and when I answer 'Oh, I'm so and so from Combat Classroom, it's this obscure webmanga but it's recently getting tankoubon print editions.  No scanlators have picked up the series yet but I get the books off amazon.jp." and they go "Ohhh yeah... I think I heard about that online.  Cool" or something.  But I want a prop to back this up.

So I commissioned an artist to make a fake, authentic looking manga cover.  Front, spine, back.  I'll de-bind the cover off a real Japanese manga and then rebind this new cover onto it after getting it printed.  Because that's how I think I should spend $300; To troll people with a fake obscure manga.

This is my version of opulence.  Fear me. :V

That sounds pretty great if you can pull it off.

This.

Oh for sure. Considering I spent $250 on the commission alone, I'll probably post wallpapers online.  ...Maybe I'll print the cover, textless, as a poster for my own enjoyment too.

My biggest concern is binding the new cover to the manga.

Sounds fun, and probably cheaper than some of the Warcraft cosplay Blizcon brings in :P

Maybe?  I'm sure there have been some scary expensive cosplays.  THough this... Well $300 is just for the MANGA...  The helmet was $140 or so, $55 for the base helmet, $50 for the 3D printed ears (I outsourced them to a high end printing service and they're 100% solid), plus paint and adhesive.  Heh.

I am slightly jelly of that helmet, even though there's no context on earth for me to ever wear a helmet like that.

Sounds exciting, badass, and hilarious!

This is what happens when you get a decent career and are fiscally responsible!  You go full Weeb and indulge in your dorkyness with reckless abandon!

Heed my story all of you!  Don't make the decisions that I have and you can lead a different path!

It's marginally better than spending your rent money on porn commissions...so...

Considering that furries tend to drop the price of a cheap vehicle on their costuming hobbies, not including commissions, badges, and everything else,
this actually seems pretty conservative by comparison.

$300? Thats it? I burned over $1200 in leather and plate armor last year just for ren faires. Not to mention the realistic wolf head I bought earlier is worth $1200. And I'm not even done with the costume yet. The body suit is another $1000 without the stilts and a 3rd set of armor just for the body suit. Which is another $800 I think. So nearly 5k total.

And before I forget, thats with putting 3k into my garage last summer, framing a 3 season porch. And more than likely spending another 2-3k in windows for the house. Oh yeah, 2 hot rods too that need thousands of dollars worth of parts. Not gonna even bother going into how much the new gaming pc has cost yet.

So no, you are not anywhere near going to far yet in my opinion. Step it up, you got a ways to go.

I WISH I had as much money as everyone above. I have to do everything myself by hand to save money, and then it takes forever and wastes my time.

Asside from choosing an education in a career field that I'm SUPER KEEN on which had sufficient employment opportunities and a bit of luck, I actually do a fair bit of budgeting to make things work.  Or well, I do budgeting to make things work BETTER?  My rational is if I can make the best financial decisions in one area, I can indulge in other ares.  Though I'm also lucky that my evil communist home of Canada gave me $13k or so in grants, leaving me with only $17.5k in initial student debt.

I mean, I have a monthly spread sheet that's built round two 88hr paycheques a month, leaving two extra paycheques a year unbudgeted for and are surplus.  The spreadsheet has surpluses by default and coming in under budget leaves more surpluses.  I have a budgeting app for tracking my 'entertainment', 'grocery' and 'cleaning/hygene/pharma' budgets so I can see how ahead or behind the monthly spending budget's I am.  I've been throwing over time at my student loans to tackle them more aggressively, since the less I owe, the less interest I pay.  I have a whole setup to provide my entertainment purely from the internet, negating need for a cable TV provider despite being a massive TVaholic. I even have a spread sheet to make projections on my power bills... >_>

Though undeniably, $59K a year with no dependents other than a tortoise shell domestic short hair cat is probably the biggest factor. ^^;  Everything else just keeps me from truly squandering  I have co-workers who make about the same per hour as me but have much more financial difficulties than me.

My completed sound and light radio prop for Anime North powered by an Arduino Pro Mini and an Adafruit Audio FX Mini Board. It has 30 Japanese radio chatter tracks that it randomly plays at random intervals. The backlight increases in brightness during playback. It also has an interactivity function where ewe press the talk tailon, the backlight goes red, and after ewe release the talk tailon a random 'acknowledgement' clip is played back. (Basically a pool of 7 samples of 'Ryokai!')

Yea, it's that right there. Try budgeting a 10k suit on a measly 15k a year... That's like 2/3rds of my annual pay there. If I made your salary my hobbies would explode.

Also, I'm afraid of all the math/budget micromanaging you do... that's some obsessive penny pinching.

You think people are ok with you defacing your rifle?

It's supposed to be under the rail, so you have something soft to grab on.

It's just an adaptation of the cute charm/dangles you see girls decorating their phones with. :P

This is going to be the worst photo of me on the planet, but I can't NOT post it.  ...In short, while at Anime North me and friends took a selfie with Canadian Minster of Defense, Harjit Sajjan.  He just happened to be at the same Greek restaurant we went to at midnight.  ...Probably for the best that the rifle and the armor were left in the car.
