It's been theorised that this is because they were once burrowing animals and having a backward-facing pouch means you don't accidentally fill it up with dirt as you dig. However since they changed lifestyles to live in trees, the digging claws becoming climbing claws, this is now not exactly the best situation for a baby koala.
