Way harder than you'd think, cramming character development and world building into dialogue. If you're working with an abstract or pixel art style, you're limited to what you can do via gameplay and what the worlds look like. Plus, all facial expressions have to be in the dialogue, since you can't have people nod or smile or frown. Has to come through with just words. And this doesn't include the whole, "games are usually designed and written at the same time" so characters are forced into areas and you have to make that work whether you want to or not.
