Bit the bullet and ordered a new rig

A couple months ago I mentioned that my current rig is a bit jury rigged, the motherboard is dying, but due to unforeseen financial issues (water heater crapping out and water bed catastrophically failing) I wasn't able to get the used motherboard I wanted. So, now that finances are not an issue I pretty much ordered a whole rig.

Rosewill Thor VS black case, Intel Core i7-6700K 8M Skylake Quad-Core 4.0 GHz, Gigabyte G1 Gaming GA-z170x, cool master hyper 212 evo cpu cooler, and 16gb ddr4 ram. Only thing left over from my old rig will be my HDD and my GTX 970 4 gb. My wallet hates me right now.

It might be me, but I think an i7 paired with a GTX970 is a bit much.  Usually people have i5s with that GPU.

An I5 2400 is what I have now, but with a less common socket. If the pricing ever comes down on a 980ti, I would love to get a pair for SLI.

By the time that happens, nVidia will be on their 10XX series, and if how they treated Kepler/7XX series cards is anything to go by, your 980TI SLI will be massively outperformed by a 1060.  The cards are strong, but nVidia wants to sell the new, and will continue discouraging the old to get more people to upgrade.  I have a 750TI, so I'm not sure how bad I have it.

Funny enough, Single-precision TFLOPs on your card is actually lower than the prior-gen 650 Ti (both are about 75% that of the GPU inside the PS4, which is at ~1.8T The 650 is ~1.4T and the 750Ti is ~1.3T.)

Oh damn, looks like I should upgrade.  I have an aging Phenom 965 as I told you in the DooM thread, so I reckon all new hardware would be needed.  Then again, what is there to play?  Might as well get a PS Quad at this point...

Any reasonable 8-thread system should be just fine, toss in 16GB RAM and at minimum a 4GB GPU.

i7s are useless, or at least give a minimal boost in performance relative to their cost.  AMD octacores are a joke that are outclassed even by i3s.

Fuck it, I'll get a PS4.  30FPS with drops, at least I don't have to worry about the programmers being assholes because "uh duh, no one buys games on pc anyway" and call me entitled when I tell them the game is broken.

Yea, they're still power-hungry things, but they do work well. The i3 only really wins for gaming due to better memory bandwidth. When it comes to transcoding, you want as many cores/threads as you can possibly throw at the damned thing.

Well I'm not gonna use my computer for anything worthwhile besides surfing the net and jerking it to gay furry porn, so I guess even a Pentium 4 CS:GO cyka blyat machine would suffice.

Yes, yes it would. As long as you didn't have to deal with a lot of JavaScript crap.

Actually, a Pentium 3 would work. I've got a 533 MHz laptop sitting here that works just fine browsing my regular sites.

I really need to set up my cyka blyat room in the basement with this P4 oven with a Radeon 4670 in it, and play CS GO on it to unleash my inner Russian.

Well Nvidia just announced the 1080, which will be released at the end of May.

I'm impressed with how strong those cards will allegedly be.  Either they're onto magic, or are exaggerating their numbers.

Every product release basically promises that they are bringing you the next coming of Jesus.  Wait for third party benchmark reviews.

Good way to look at it.  I remember when the PS4 was touted as a supercharged PC, yet it's so underpowered, they have to make a new revision to stay relevant.
