Okay so like, anybody who knows me knows that I rave about this game to anybody in earshot. For those of you who don't know, Crypt of the Necrodancer is a rhythm rogue-like dungeon crawler in which you hop around through randomly generated dungeons beating up baddies, with a pretty cool boss fight at the end of each zone.  What makes this game unique though is that you have to do every action to the rhythm of the music, otherwise nothing will happen and you'll lose your coin multiplier. It also has some RPG elements to it, with items and weapons that can buff your stats (more damage, more defense, more hp, etc.) or even dramatically change gameplay.

It's really hard for me to come up with any real faults to this game.

Artwork: super aesthetically pleasing retro pixel art, it's hella charming and grows on you immediately, I would liken it to a trippier OG Spelunky World.

Story: Pretty simple and not really the focal point of the game, but cool and original nonetheless. I also love that the main protagonists are all badass female characters.

Soundtrack: 10/10. I would probably just listen to it on its own. It's evident how much effort went into producing the music for this game. Plus if you don't like it, there's EDM and Metal remixes of the OST, -and- the game has beat detection, so you can add your own music in and play to that instead! Just pick something with a simple (preferably 4/4) rhythm and a clear drum beat or baseline, the game doesn't like jank polyrhythms and whatnot.

Gameplay: Incredible, and almost frighteningly addicting. It's not an easy game, and the difficulty consistently scales upwards as you progress, especially when you start using different characters. It's simple yet challenging, and highly rewarding as you improve, and punishes dumb mistakes brutally hard. It's just the right mix to make you keep hitting the quick restart button over, and over, and over. Local multiplayer is a gas too if you have a couple friends over, it's just a darn shame that there's no online support.

Each character provides a new challenge or constraint, e.g. Eli: can't attack but has infinite bombs, Monk: gets free items but dies upon touching gold, Aria: hardcore character, dies on a missed beat, has 1 hp, and can only use the basic dagger (I'm working on beating all zones mode with her right now :P) There's a unique host of enemies, bosses, and weapons too, enough variety to keep anybody hooked for a few months of heavy play at the very least.

I could keep raving about this damn game all day, but I think you get the picture! If you don't believe me you can try it for yourself for free, the alpha/beta version is available online for free here, with pretty much identical gameplay to the full version, but just missing a lot of content and probably a bit buggier. The full version is on steam and worth every penny. Lemme know what you think, or if you've played it before!

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. The shopkeeper sings along Opera style >:3

Oh god I love this game!  Everything you said is absolutely true.  I can't believe you didn't mention the fire and ice zone where the music changes from a metal to an electronic version of the same song depending on whether your on the fire or ice side of any given level.  I wish you the best of luck beating the game with Aria.  I tried a few times with here and just gave up.

IKR? I can't stop making people try it, I swear I've gotten at least two or three friends hooked already. There's just way too many cool little details to list 'em all in one go, but you're right! The shifting music between the fire and ice zones is a really nice touch.

I've beaten each zone with Aria individually, but all zones mode is pretty fucking brutal. I think the farthest I've gotten is the boss of zone 3. Sometimes you just get whacked by the dumbest things T.T
