Luccus
Google uses a software to make out whats shown on an image. This is no big surprise, but the interesting thing is, they are using a "convolutional neural network" for this. Basically meaning they show pictures to the program and tell it what can be seen. Meanwhile the program tries to make out distinct features that differentiate for example a picture of a "dog" from one with a "house" on it. Once the program gets these features (like legs and a face / bricks and windows) it can tell on its own what it sees. Now here comes the cool part: The program can overinterpret pictures until it makes out features (and things) that aren't really there. Like in the following animation it sees Lizard heads, mammals and buildings where there is nothing - forming a weird, psychedelic image. And the best part: You can feed it pictures yourself and see what it overinterpretes into them by using deepdreamgenerator.com (to make the cooler "deep" pictures you'll need to create an accout, BUT they don't check the e-mail adress, so you can just enter in your perfectly legitimate e-mail address) So go ahead and take some digital LSD and see what it will do and upload or link the outcome.
MuttButt
What's the difference if you just upload a picture without signing in? oooh, you get more settings and stuff. neat. I did the thing! Fear my animal hands Edited January 14, 2016 by MuttButt

Saxon
Why does the software see so many animals, rather than typewriters, baubles, jam jars and potted plants?

The DeepDream app is just using a limited set of patterns to get more bizarre results. Putting animal heads everywhere is a lot weirder than just random household objects. The program can only see and combine features and patterns of things it knows. As Onnes said, deepdreamgenerator.com has a very limited set of things. If you would be to download the source code and only feed it porn it would produce very differrent pictures. Speaking of which, Barnectomy couldn't you at least 'GO DEEPER'? (< that's how the website calls it, I swear!) Now there's at least a bird there. Even though I'm not sure if that makes it better. Yarra
I saw shit like this when I experienced a week of ayahuasca ceremonies with a shaman in the middle of a primitive amazonian jungle village a few years back (minus the Subway). I really love the Subway addition though. It's a nice touch. That reminds me, is Jared getting a new "footlong" every day in the clink? Luccus
The 'Neuron' option under 'Dream Type' seems to do good. It turns everything into fruits and weird spaghetti mutants. How nice. Here the original for comparison. Edited January 16, 2016 by Luccus
