Went to the ER last night

a little before 3 AM, I woke up with heart palpitations. I felt it was best to go to a hospital cause I thought it was very serious, like if I was having a heart attack or had a disease. They told me I was a bit dehydrated and was a little low on potassium, so they gave me two big potassium pills to help it. What really sucked about being there was having this big needle in my arm for several hours, to both take blood out of me and put clear fluids in my body. Me drinking caffeine (such as soda) must've contributed to the palpitations as well, so I'm gonna try to refrain from that for a while. I just bought some bananas and orange juice to have some more potassium.

Yikes. Yeah, there's many reasons not to drink sodas, and that's probably the biggest one. You'll probably feel healthier once you switch to something less caffeinated. Actually, if you're sensitive to caffeine, I wouldn't recommend tea either. Whenever I want something different to drink, I usually go with fruit or vegetable juice.

Glad you mention that, could I drink plenty of fruit juice, especially V8.

Also, I took IV drips while I was at the VR, and right now my arms feel a little funny, like there's stuff still inside there.

I mean, your palpitations were more likely to be caused by the caffeine than the sugar, because while your body ultimately processes all your food as sugar, caffeine is a drug. Juice should be a-okay. Storebought is okay, but it's ultimately healthier and probably cheaper just to buy the fruits and make your own. Vegetable juice generally isn't sweetened much, but they do put a lot of salt in it if it's storebought, so same principle applies.

I remember having heart palpitations after I stayed up for 48 hours and took 2x my prescribed drugs dosage. That was fun. At some point (around when I was having trouble breathing) I thought, "Maybe I should check online to see if this could kill me."

I ended up phoning a doctor and spending the next 40 minutes giving information and answering questions before referring me to 2-3 other places. One of them couldn't speak English well and had a strong Indian accent, so I barely understand what she was saying. About 1-2 hours later I told them not to bother because the drugs had run their course and my heart rate had gone down on its own.

I see why people go to the ER. Hell, it would've been quicker to walk to the ER and ask.

Yeah, the ER is the way to go when you have something that needs to be taken care of as soon as possible. Been drinking lots of water, it does help quite a bit. I just hope this ends sooner than later.

I'm glad you're alright. See what the Dr. says, if you can maybe seek some short term relief, maybe a minor sedative? But I'm no Dr,. but perhaps something like Valium would help calm ya down, in the sort term: In the long term: Diet, rest, exercise.

Hope ya feel better.

Right now there's a vein in my left arm joint that appears to be swelling, how bad is that?

well swelling could mean any number of things. it could just be inflammation from the IV, but if you're concerned about it being something more serious you could call a doctor and ask

Well I have an appointment at my company's health clinic so hopefully that'll work out. Also, my right arm was injected with the IV, not the left.

This happened to me too, a few years back.

I got up in the morning to go pee, felt super dizzy and my vision started to go black and trouble breathing. I could hear my hear pounding, but nothing else. Terrifying. I had to lay back down to stop it and for a bit after keep sitting down or it started happening again.

I was an idiot and still went to work.

When I got there, I decided 'better safe than sorry' and called my doctor's office who told me to go to the hospital immediately. So, I drove my self to the hospital, getting super lost on the way and ending up in a hospital in the middle of the city about 45 minutes away. (If this had been a real emergency, I would be SO dead XP)

There, I sat around for a couple hours before the did some tests and told me it was dehydrated (probably partly leftover from my hike in Rocky Mountain National Park the week before) and that was probably responsible. Still, I agreed to let them do a few more precationary tests one of them indicated a heart irregularity and they recommended I set an appointment with a visiting heart specialist.

All in all, the trip cost me $200 and eventually turned out to have more to do with some kind of salt-retention problem that was causing elevated blood pressure.

Oh, and when I had my appointment later the heart specialist took one look at the papers they gave me and said "Whoever referred you to me down there is an idiot. These are a normal variation in heart rythmns." At least he didn't charge me for the visit! :P

I was actually in a very similar situation as you except that I was sick with a stomach bug so I hadn't ate or drank anything in nearly two weeks so when my mom finally convinced me to go my potassium levels where so low that they had to put me on a two hour potassium drip and I had to take those pills you look

Eugh, that sounds scary, I hope you're feeling okay now bud!

I hope you don't live in the US or they'll charge you a fortune for that trip to the hospital :I

srs, when I got hit in the face with a metal grinder it cost 11k before insurance for a CT scan and 24 stitches, plus another 3k from the urgent care just for giving me an ice pack and telling me I need to go to the ER! I'm lucky my parent's insurance is pretty decent.

Ice Pack: $1

Consultation Fee: $2999

Part of the problem is that, even though hospitals are a business, they don't have to competitively price like one. Nobody makes them share their a la carte prices with you, and everything is a la carte. If a doctor offers to do something for you while you're there, have common sense and determine if you actually need it. It's not free, and if it's something superfluous: congrats, you and your insurance are getting nickel-and-dimed. Don't get taken advantage of. The problem could be partially alleviated if people could look at the prices for all the individual procedures they may need, compare the prices of these services by hospital and give themselves a ballpark figure of how much it will cost at each respective hospital. In the event of a life-or-death emergency, this obviously isn't practical, but for literally anything else (i.e. most of the reasons you go to a hospital) you'll know and potentially save yourself a shit-ton of money (mean and median price statistics don't mean shit, to be frank. Hospital prices vary wildly)

I'll try to think a little more carefully about that next time I'm half conscious, stifling the blood gushing from a giant gash on my temple :V
