Anyone else tired of "Coming of Age/Slice of Life" Gay Furry Porn novels?

I'm looking mainly at Kyell Gold's stuff, but I once stumpted both Rabbits [Of Rabbit Valley] for something that wasn't "Coming of Age Gay Porn." I ended up with something by Kevin Frane, about a wizard who split himself in two, and was bored.

Is... anyone else tired of this stuff? I mean it apparently sells well, but I'm 30 years old and been at peace with my preferences since I was 16; coming of age and coming to terms with sexuality are not themes that I really identify with any longer - but the only books that really come to mind that aren't that are Sixes Wild [STRAIGHT PORN! But also a decent Western]; Otters in Space [Which lacks porn entirely, but has some clumsiness I overlook due to otters], Ratha's Creature which is about sentient paleolithic cats, and N'Duk the Hunter, which is Furry Conan.

And I guess Phil Guessez Midshipman series.

But coming of age stories, college stories, Iunno. I'm wanting something else, but that seems to be the minority. Anyone else feel this way?

Bam! This is why there's so much. Nothing else to it, really.

As for being tired of such things... I don't think I've ever really bothered browsing or looking into this stuff, so I have no idea D:

What the heck is Otters in Space?!

I know it sells well, but goddamnit there's got to be more stuff out there that isn't just thinly veiled stand-ins for the highschool/college crowd or those who look fondly on those days.

What the heck is Otters in Space?!

Scifi Adventure. Post-Human apocolypse, anthro cats/dogs/otters/others have taken over in a semi-parody of human lifestyle. Otters run the spaceships and stuff. Dogs are social - if not legal - superiors to cats. One cat's sister goes missing, assumptions are made, yada yada.

I enjoyed it enough to buy the second book at the same con. Mary... Dowd, I think is the Author. IIRC it's published through Rabbit Valley.

I'm always open to reading a new gay slice of life or coming of age story, provided it's actually GOOD.

But, I agree that gay furry coming of age and slice of life comics and books are a dime a dozen at this point.

Though, at some level, it's nice that we live in an age where we're actually getting BORED with gay and/or gay furry novels because there are TOO MANY of them.

Everybody is really obsessed with "muh equality" so those kinds of books sell like hotcakes

No, they like reading books they can empathize with the main characters. They identify with the struggles that the characters are going through and in a way, put themselves in the place. It isn't about MUH EQUALITY.

Can they be good, yeah, but at this point I just roll my eyes upwards when I see the same story. "There's this husky and he's just graduated small town highschool and he's all young and confused, then he goes to college and meets this older fox, who is wiser in the ways of the world and they have a romance".

Bah.

I wonder if it's because somewhere inside, many of us want to fantasize about having a memorable coming-of-age story, when we're all mundane as hell?

Yup. Mine was boring as all hell. No conflict, no sexual tension, no "Let me show you the world" moments by a caring slightly older person. And I liked it that way. No drama, no stress.

I want a good scifi action adventure mystery. Or something like... Course of Empire. Only more furries.

I was actually working on a sci-fi action adventure short story. I never really got around to writing much, but it'd have your good old "evil empire". It just wouldn't focus on a fight against it, but rather a regular character trying to make a living.

Please finish it and make it publishable.

So what furry fiction do you read, then?

None that are truly memorable, but I glance a few here and there when I am at cons. I bought a copy of red lantern before just to see the hub-bub about it and it really didn't impress me.

Then there's Jack which is okay. Also read Sabrina Online.

TastesLikeGreen is an FA short story/novella- length author that has written a fair bit of readable gay porn in his gallery on FA.  NSFW, he has some odd fetishes and tastes that may not appeal to all.  His gay material is rather tame by comparison, but not slice of life or coming of age.

I'm guilty of having written this. I think it's an easy trope that's easy to sell.  The fandom is mostly young nerds, many of whom feel some kind of discomfort with the world for some reason, so selling these stories is about as hard as selling ice cream on a hot day.

Yes, but yours (from memory) included romance, actual plot and other literary devices and  novelties so often missing from the "insert tab-a into slot-b" formulaic crap that dominates the genre.

I feel is was pretty formuliac!  It also didn't really go anywhere at the end, it was kinda just 'Yay, they get married and grownupness happens!'. :x

So I remembered something I can add here. One of my friends gave me this furry porn collection novel thing where each story is really loosely based off one of the 10 commandments and one of them, while it wasn't about a gay dude, perfectly fits this thread.

It took place in some fantasy land and it was about like some teenage/maybe early 20's badger guy and his little sister and he had mommy issues after his mom died and they went to some city and he started working as a janitor/helper at a brothel or some shit. Towards the end he loses his virginity to the brothel owner and her magic lizard vagina fixes all his mommy issues. Like after he was literally curled up crying to her about his mom's death and shit she goes "I think u ned dis~" and just fucks him, and then he's ALLLLLL BETTER. It was the most WTF shit ever and reminded me of that shitty trope you see in stuff like mass effect (which I love btw, so don't think I hate it >:V ) where the man's penis fixes the woman's problems (the jack romance) except reversed.

I'm pretty sure bad furry writers are only capable of writing coming of age stories where the main character gets laid and it fixes all their problems.

So... More seriously, there's just no surprise.  Look at the demographics of this fandom.  You have the majority from the United States, or western nations, while liberal compared to other parts of the world, they can come from families, communities, or regions where they still still face homophobia.  There are people on this forum who even admit to still being in the closet.  So writing fiction that feeds a fantasy of validation of one's homosexuality is a really easy sell to this fandom.  This fandom has a lot of tropes, and of those tropes, acceptance and affection are major ones something that those who feel they couldn't even hold hands with their partners in public, if they even had the guts for same sex dating, would eat it up like candy.

SURPRISE miserable forever-alone basement virgins think sex with a sympathetic experienced partner is the cure for the sadbrains.

Close! Mary Lowd is the author. Published by FurPlanet, but we do distribute through RV so the confusion is understandable.

What exactly are you looking for? Non-porn? Non-gay? Or just non-coming of age gay? I'd be able to make a more accurate recommendation with more info.

Thanks,

Fuzz

I'm actually a real big fan of slice-of-life, mostly just because I was never too big into fantasy books in general.

But I digress, I'll read it, I'll read anything, but only if it's good and doesn't bore me.

I would like to write a cool novel or comic, but I'm no good at writing and it'd just become shitty and formulaic haha
