It's that time again!

Time for the motherfucking space olympics. Missed deadlines, unfinished venues, shitty faucet water, polluted bay water, plagues, criminals... what's not to love about a sporting event costing tens of billions of dollars in a corrupt, poor ass third world country, because the IOA wants to make said third world country feel special, like they're at the big boys developed world table.

So, anyone else going to watch the trainwreck? Like I said in the chat thread, I'd love to go back to ancient Greek practices and have everyone play in the nude. Would make women's volleyball, women's swimming and diving (and other watersports :V), and women's anything more interesting.

I'm sure I'll see a stray penis here and there, but it won't be any different than what I see in any men's locker room.
At least they'll be attached to attractive people and not your typical fat middle aged man.

Yeah... Brazil isn't a "poor ass third world country", it's the 8th largest economy in the world. Because of the rapidity of their economic growth, they still struggle with poverty and other issues in higher numbers than other second-world countries, but so do large portions of the U.S. despite it being a superpower. I don't think anyone would be too happy if the Olympics were being held in Detroit or Camden... I know they are not as bad as rio, but the U.S. has been a superpower for over 70 years and still deals with extreme poverty and crime in many cities.

Honestly I don't know why the Brazilians choose to have it take place in Rio, it would be tantamount to the U.S. choosing to hold them in Detroit. Many of the issues now facing the Olympics would have not been if they had held it somewhere else, like their planned capital city Brasilia, which would even go to show off the wealth of their country rather than the poverty and crime that plague its largest city.

However, this still leaves the issues of the faults in the construction of the Olympic venues and missed deadlines; likely more-so due to corruption than a lack of funds or ability, so that still shows a glaring issue at least with the state governments of Brazil if not nationally, especially when something as important to national prestige is being worked on.

Yes, but the IOC seems to choose countries that are unable to handle such an enormous undertaking. The Olympics cost a ton of money. I think I saw anywhere between $10 and 20 billion dollars, although that might be too low. And large economy does not necessarily equal large amounts of extra capital to spend on building all the venues, housing, catering, transportation, security, and so forth to handle such a massive undertaking. Brazil is in pretty deep debt and this will only add to the debt, what, for 2 weeks of glory and then afterword a bunch of empty housing and stadiums (if they're smart they'll repurpose those for, say, low income housing, and use the stadium for soccer tournaments or something). It is true that they chose Rio 10 years ago or so, and things change, but I think even back then they should have figured that Brazil, even as a second world country, did not have the actual free capital (IE money not tied up for other things, like running the government) to handle this. Hell, Russia is pretty much second world in most of the country and look at how well Sochi ended up. Even London, a First World, "Rich" country had problems, and if England had problems putting on Olympics do you think a country that's more poor than England would have even more trouble?

I don't really think there is a country that can really afford to pay that much money, even the U.S. would simply be adding that to the already colossal national debt. Brazil wouldn't have really appeared worse off on paper than any other second world country 10 years ago, when its economy was growing rapidly and many were touting it as the biggest economic success story since China (hell, it even surpassed Britain), so to the IOC it would have appeared as the perfect candidate with this massive growth. Now their economy has shrunk but they are still far from third world status.

Anyways, it is more a matter of having the ability to handle the logistics of preparing for and putting on the event than having the funds in hand, which to me is were Brazil really failed. I don't think that the disaster the 2016 Olymics appears to be shaping up to be was inevitable because of Brazil being the host; with competent planning and a better choice of location it likely could have went very smoothly. However, it seems that through either incompetence or corruption, they have made the worst decisions at every turn, and now we are here.

So, overall, i don't think it is the choice of Brazil that was the problem, I think it was incompetence and possibly corruption within the Brazilian government that caused the major problems.

Did they have to swim in the sewage and washed up body parts beach area, yet? I kinda wanna see that part, and how they try and make it look better than it is...filters, editing, and what not. But what an ecological disaster; the Olympics are a corporate scam, and the $ could be used for so many other more helpful things.

Down with the Olympics! Extinguish the torch!

Keep seeing this shit on FB even with my liberal friends, which doesn't make any sense.

The reason she's being "ignored" is because no one gives a fuck about olympic sports like shooting. Along with all of Track and Field and sports like Ping Pong. People care more about things like Gymnastics and swimming than the minor sports.

Also, Emma Coburn who runs the Steeplechase is hot as shit.

First off, Ryan Lochte is a douche. He's an immature frat boy asshole. That being said, it sounds like the Brazillian police exaggerated about exactly what Lochte and his friends did at the gas station.

Quote

An extensive review of surveillance footage by a USA TODAY Sports videographer who also visited the gas station supports swimmer Gunnar Bentz’s claim that he did not see anyone vandalize the restroom...

....A USA TODAY Sports videographer who visited the bathroom Thursday found no damage to soap dispensers and mirrors and said none of those items appeared to be new. Some media accounts suggested the men had broken down a door, which USA TODAY Sports also did not observe....

...Of the videos available, including footage from a camera trained on the restroom doors, a review by USA TODAY Sports does not find any showing the swimmers going near the bathrooms. They are not seen entering or coming out of them on those recordings.

So, we know for sure that they peed behind the gas station, and also damaged some paper advertisement poster. And there doesn't seem like there's evidence they damaged the bathroom. I've watched some of the surveillance video, it shows them walking out from behind the gas station and trying to get into a cab, where a guy in black comes up to the cab and pulls out a gun and points it inside the cab. If the Americans didn't know Portuguese, and some guy came up with a gun and started demanding money in either Portuguese or bad English, I can see how they might have thought they were being robbed. There was probably a language or cultural barrier there.

I'm not letting Lochte off the hook, even pissing behind the gas station and damaging some kind of cheap paper ad sign, and then exaggerated what happened, is ccrappy. But maybe two corrupt cops saw some Americans they could get some money off of, because in the mind of Brazilians Americans are probably all rich and shit.

Still, there's this:

And then this stupidity:

Yes, we should support our fellow 'Murricans no matter what they do because if you don't your an American-hating commie socialist and probably vote for Hillary. If this is the way mainstream conservatism in America is going I just give up.
