Tsuujou
Mischief - https://www.madewithmischief.com/Just adding this because it's what I use religiously for sketching. It's excellent for beginners and people who need ample room or warm up with a lot of thumbnails. It's extremely cheap.
Wolflich
https://krita.org/Decent and quite customisable (and also free unless you buy Gemini). Like somewhere between SAI and PS in terms of tools. I like it for painting but it also seems to have some photo editing capability that I haven't really explored, like the ability to open RAW files.

yell0wf0x
If yer on a tablet or phone, sketchbook is pretty awesome by far. I think it's the best art app I've tried. It's the one I use for drawing these days.https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.adsk.sketchbook
SpikedKanine
http://drawpile.net/It's a pretty good stand alone program-- but you can also use it for network drawing. It's less broken and new like O.C 1, DREADED Hamachi and PaintChat. It lags for some people in the network drawing-- but other than that I can't really fault it. Edited September 25, 2015 by SpikedKanine Forgot to explain why it's good.
Sidhenearlahi
When I'm colouring my work I tend to pass it around multiple programs, usually SAI and PhotoshopBut my initial concepts, sketching, and lineart is all done in ArtRageIt just has such a nice feel to it, very geared towards people who enjoy that traditional aesthetic, very simple interface, and just very pretty to look at in general

I don't think my laptop is THAT bad to be whats causing it.I go on (what I think are) dedicated servers and theirs still not really a difference. I'll note ya. Maug
I used MangaStudio5 / Clipstudio 5 for a majority of my work, its like SAI and the important parts of photoshop that artists use fused together. It's blows SAI out of the water and is updated more then once every 5 years 'cough' 'cough' .I still use photoshop for post processing and detail painting.

RTDragon
Adobe Photoshop CS2 is free now and does pretty much everything you'd want. But that's only for customers that bought the actual physical CD's of CS 2 before adobe went with the creative cloud.
RTDragon
Nope. It's free for everyone. They disabled their activation servers for that so it's a free download - https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs2-product-downloads.htmlYou didn't read what i said it's only for those customers that legitimately purchased it. Plus it's outdated software so it won't work on more modern machines. plus there are far better alternatives to photoshop now these days. RTDragon
Still it's not considering a free download it's technically for those who already have CS2 and it's very old software i assume you didn't pay close attention to the link you posted. Joshi
Let's get some 3D in here. Blender is mymodelling and rendering software No. 1 http://blender.org For environment and nature I'm using Planetside's Terragen http://planetside.co.uk/ And for VFX or CGI Adobe's After Effects/Blender or Hitfilm with Mocha Pro as tracker
Zydala
MyPaint is a great software that is free and works great on Windows and Linux. MacOSX is supported but I am not sure about the pressure sensitivity; at one point it didn't have it... This was one of my favorite programs when I was on Linux and I think it works great for sketching. Most of my CG stuff was made in MyPaint (like my icon) so it's definitely useable as a full-fledged art software. http://mypaint.org/about/

DrGravitas
Ever wanted to try 3D Sculpting but didn't want to spend a ton of money on ZBrush to find out if you were any good?! Well don't you worry! Check out Sculptris! Sculptris is a free 3D sculpting program that works like a slimmed down, bare-bones ZBrush. It's less like 3D modelling and more like Digital Clay! Want to try your hand at more traditional 3D modelling instead? Check out the free and feature rich Blender!
Lopaw
I found this to be quite useful for a time, now I have sorted the issues with my lineart to a degree and don't need it any longer. http://lazynezumi.com/ This is a brush stabilizing program that was basic and free when I used it. Now having used the current version's 30 day trail I have to say it it is a great deal better but now isn't free. It does work wonders though when set up right. Punnchy
I used to be a big user of Sai, but now I've found a program that hasn't had any problems with my old tablet, and has some brush support tricks that I haven't seen in sai at all, like the symmetry brush. The program is MediBang Paint and it's free :
