Mankind's greatest achievement

Given all the rants and edgy threads lately I thought I would make my first thread a bit more upbeat.

Talk about what you think is our greatest achievement as a species, because why not.

Personally, I consider it a tie between the moon landing and statistics. Accurate statistics can give us a good idea of where we've been and where we're going and the moon landing is the furthest man has ventured outside of Earth.

Honestly? The internet. I can instantly communicate with someone across timezones and language barriers and continents. Share ideas. Trade stories. Really close that cultural, ethnic and racial gap that has historically divided the planet.

Amazing.

Also the Philly cheese steak sandwich. God damn that's an impressive sandwich.

Art in its most beautiful extremes, particularly in architectural design.

Literature, including ancient mythologies.

Music and the pursuit in endless creativity that births music genres, styles, interpretation, etc.

Computers and the entire goddamn Internet.

FUCKING SPACE TRAVEL.

3D PRINTING.

PROSTHETIC LIMBS AND ARTIFICIAL ORGANS.

MEDICINE IN GENERAL, HOLY SHIT WE ARE SO LUCKY WE'RE NOT WALKING AROUND A SYPHILIS ZOMBIES RIGHT NOW.

This. The internet is magical, even if it's 99% memes and cat videos.

Our level of space exploration and our current understanding of the universe and nature itself is a pretty remarkable achievement. We are on this tiny spec in a universe that might be infinite and we can explain what is happening billions upon billions of kilometers away from our home. We have left this planet and landed on the moon, we are currently trying to figure out how to get to another planet. We built facilities that can recreate the conditions of the beginning of time and space as we see it today.

But at the same time there are also other achievements that are just as important. Like eradicating deadly diseases through vaccination. Our medical capabilities as a whole are incredible these days!

Then there is the internet and all devices that connect to it today. More people can connect today than ever before. The smartphone in itself is an amazing achievement as well. Call it overrated or a waste of time, but it IS without a doubt the most versatile consumer product that has ever been built. Name something you do regularly and the smartphone can do it for you or at least help you with it in some way.

Indeed the Internet is certainly up there, it's the only global communications method free of censorship (depending on where you go obviously).

Evangelion. ;^3

IMO the ending of the show and movie went on for too long but otherwise a fine action/drama piece ;3

According to Donnie Darko, the greatest invention ever to benefit mankind is antiseptics

"Before antiseptics, there was no sanitation, especially in medicine"

Remember that movie? Eh? Ehh?

Whatever

That movie rules.

Humanity has had a few truly great achievements, and they're all interconnected: earlier achievements made later achievements possible.

Taming fire, because that gave us light, warmth, security, and cooking.

Agriculture and animal domestication, because that gave us food security and surplus enough for us to begin trying to make real sense of the world.

Embracing science and scientific reasoning, though it took a few tries, because knowledge and technology are both godsends.

Industrialization, because despite the fuel and resource consumption problems, it allowed us to begin turning over robotic tasks from humans to machines.

The manned moon landings, despite being short visits, because they showed that human life outside Earth is possible.

Every exploratory space probe we've ever launched, because autonomous robots telling us what they find are the vanguard to our eventual colonization of exoplanets.  (I'm still a bit hung up on "exo" being the prefix for "extrasolar," but alas, all living languages evolve.)

Probably the most important achievement yet is the invention of the computer.  It's the most powerful tool for knowledge storage, comprehension, and communication since the invention of writing, and it's the most powerful tool for laboring and labor amplification since the invention of the wheel.  The interconnected network of computer networks that is the Internet is simply a consequence of that invention.

All of these achievements are made or are being made genuine achievements of humanity by being made accessible to us all greatest and least, not just to the greatest of us all.

I thought you were hardcore into like, 'squishy porn'?

That phrase was hard to write.

I don't really know what you mean by "squishy."

If you mean chubbiness then yeah I have a soft spot for squishy curves. :B

The "Naked & Afraid" TV show.

It's amazing on every level

Featuring me in an episode where I was huddled in the corner of the tub because I heard a noise outside my curtain and didnt want to get out

Adult erotica. Holy shit we take that shit to a whole new level.

This is extremely true. Back in the day the closest thing to this was erotic art in culturtes such as Rome and Japan, as well as erotic classic literature (such as written by Chaucer with Canterbury tales and the like).

Nowadays we have hentai, e621 and r34, and archiveofourown.

OT: its been said before but the internet, and computers and smartphones

ArielMT covered a lot of core basics, which without their influence we wouldnt have internet, but I still find myself constantly deeply awed by how useful internet is in my life and how lucky I am to live in an age with it
