You watch a little girl's show?!? (The MLP:FIM Thread)

So, there was a thread on FAF that was a MLP thread that was what, 500-600 pages by the time the forums were closed? Probably one of the biggest threads on FAF by far (besides the game threads and "what are you watching/listening to" threads).

So, some ground rules.
- Obey the forum rules (duh).
- Try to be nice to others. This is a thread for MLP and MLP:FIM (mostly the latter). This is not a thread to bash or harass MLP fans. Yes, we get it, we're grown adults (mostly men) who like a kid's show. Just like people who like Steven Universe or Adventure Time or Gravity Falls.
- If you're not a fan but curious about the show you're welcome however.
- Try to label spoilers with an obvious spoiler warning, or behind a spoiler tag. I know, most fans are fully caught up with the series, but not everyone.  I haven't even begun season 5 yet, and some people are behind as well. Or they're new to the series and just starting to watch it. So please don't spoil it for them (especially considering the last episode).
- Note: The term "Brony" used to just refer to male fans of FIM. However, thanks to more rather socially awkward fans, the term more refers to FIM fans that have social issues, or clop to (or draw) pony porn. Not everyone here is like that. Plus, we're all furries, and we should be used to that now. Both fandoms (being that they're both about anthro animals) have social derps, bizzare porn, fetishes, and all sorts of weird shit we'd rather not want to see. It's just the way things are.

Hmm. Anything I've forgotten? Anyway....

The show died the moment they decided to make Discord good. Season 2 was the epicenter of bliss this show produced. Season 3 was a haaaaaard decline and Season 4 completely turned me off within the first episodes. Though I will sport a discord avatar and pretend Season 3 never happened, I've to say they milked that cash cow so dry that it withered up and turned into something mighty sorrowful.

This show has been in a decline for the last couple of seasons, frankly. :/

I've been having trouble finishing season 4 because I've found it a bit bland at times. However, I did watch the last couple episodes from season 5 and actually thought they were pretty good, so if they continue with that I could see myself really getting into it again.

Is a Brony more or less distasteful than a baby fur?

I tend to hate baby furs more. But some bronies can be worse.

SPOILERS ABOUT LATEST EPISODES (Season 5: 17 & 18)

So, what did you guys think of the last two episodes?

First off, the Big Mac episode. I am pretty happy to finally see a big mac centered episode. I was also amused that he said more lines than he's said the entire rest of the series. It's about time he started talking.
There's been a lot of controversy over the fact that Big Mac dresses in drag (as a southern belle, none the less, which was great). Mostly from tumberinas. People say it's offensive to trans people. I really don't see it. Big Mac was helping out his little sister which was awesome. If anything, I'm disappointed that we didn't find out that Big Mac actually IS a drag queen on weekends, because that would be awesome, but this is a little girl's program so they probably won't directly reference queer culture.

Then the latest episode. Yea, head exploded with this one.
I was hearing a bunch of commotion about it Saturday afternoon, and decided to check it out. Was at first disappointed when I saw it was a CMC episode. But I decided to stick around when it seemed like it would focus on Diamond Tiara and why she is the way she is. Had a feeling she'd show a softer side of herself. Was almost in tears though by the end of it.

As for the cutie marks. I had been wondering if they'd ever get them, or the series would end and they'd be like "Well, we'll just keep trying to get our cutie marks until it happens" and the whole thing would be unresolved. I'm happy for the marks, but I find them a bit... generic and too monotone. Okay, I get it, the shields represent the CMC, with the colors being the colors of their manes. And the symbols inside represent them. But... soooo monotone.

I'd have to say I really got out of the series myself back at the end of season 3 when SPOILERS

Twilight becomes an alicorn/princess

Mostly because, while I understand that this series is for little girls, and was originally made (back in the 80s at least) to sell toys, I still hate the fact they're milking the whole "princess" trend with young girls. Like how Disney brainwashes little girls to want to grow up and be a princess to sell Frozen shit, now Hasbro is doing that same thing. And here I thought FIM was supposed to be feminist.

I'm trying to get back into it again but it's hit or miss.  That fluttershy as a vampire thing was adorable.

That shit actually happened?! Wtf? That wasn't edited?

Oh that is just one little tiny bit of the amount of wtf Slice of Life was. Yes, that's legit. Watch Slice of Life. Just go. Do it now. Its an official season 4 season 5 episode about all the side characters.

Hoorah, a pony thread!

Okay, so I'm kind of in the opposite where I don't think the show has declined at all, or at least not much. I liked season four on par with season 2. Discord going good pissed me off at first, but I feel like they've mostly made it work.  He's not "good good" really, and most don't like putting up with him. Also, the Friends Forever comic he's in with Luna is fucking spectacular, so if you're into Discord, it's worth a read.

Season five thus far has been pretty alright. Just got done with "Brotherhood Social" or whatever that episode is. Lots of cringe. I don't like cringe humor, so I really didn't care for that one. Last maybe minute made up for a lot though. Very nice bout of dialogue from Big Mac.

Episode 100, "Slice of Life" is wonderful. Holy shit I can't believe what all got into that one. It had to have been so confusing for the target audience!

Also, the newest Equestria Girls movie fucking sucks. Like, it's maybe worse than the first one in just how stupid everything is. Hated the shit out of it.

So uh...yeah. That's where I am with this show.

Okay, I do have to admit that the fan service episode was great.  I mean geez, even Buttonsmash was in it!

I actually didn't like the fanservice ep all that much. A nod or two every couple episodes is fun, but that one just felt like pandering to me.
I guess it is fun to see that they're aware of a lot of the fan-stuff out there, though. (Though I thought Button Mash was already an in-show character before this episode. Or maybe I missed the point of what you were saying. ^^; )

Not gonna lie, it still weirds me out to see grown men in the little girl's toy aisle at Wal-Mart, mostly because they're scary manchildren with neckbeards bigger than Texas, and their outing to the little girl's section is the first time they've left the computer in 34875wks, and their reaction to an adult human female is basically a fedora tip or a terrified run away.

Good lord is it 2011 again?

I loved the show for the first few seasons...like...maybe the one after Shining Armor marries Princess cadence and they have to defeat the changelings. Yada yada. Of course with popularity the show kind of just rode out a bit longer...I havent kept up.

I'm not this MLP megafan that will bother seeing it in theaters, but as a mild curiosity I'll pull it up on my computer and watch it when it's old news

I don't keep up with the show anymore, but having fond memories of the show and seeing that there's a (relatively speaking) big budget film coming up for it has reinvigorated my interest. 2D animated films in the West are too few and far between anyways, so this is coming out during a stale time in Western animation. Plus, its not like the show ever stopped being good. Its just hard to hold interest in such a cartoon for a lengthy period of time.

I mean this depends on personal taste.

But to each their own.

EDIT: To the trailer's credit, at least the villain looks interesting.
But we already know how that plotpoint's gonna be resolved.
It's in the subtitle of the show itself.

Also the Superstar Saga remake comes out Oct 6.
So I know what I'll be doing that day.
Which isn't this.

I still keep up with it, though season 7 has been very weak with some outright terrible episodes. The comics still vary from "that was fun" to "that was awful"

At this point I don't know why. I'm probably going to drop it all after season seven is over. Seven years is enough.

I do want to see the movie, but I don't want to walk into a kids movie, so it'll have to wait until Redbox or Netflix.

Was into the show a couple of years ago in a watch-every-episode-within-a-week-of-it-airing kind of way... but kind of zoned out by the time the last season started. Or, maybe even the season before that... I'm not sure which one is even out now to be honest.

Might watch the movie at some point, and see if it restores some of my enthusiasm for the franchise.

It was pretty great!

It was also a collection of film and game tropes I've already seen before in other works, but nonetheless, it was great. Tempest made a great antagonist, and her song towards the end was pretty excellent, though I'm a sucker for songs sung by villains in these sorts of films. She was threatening and made her power very much apparent to the viewers, yet at the same time the movie did well enough (if a bit too easily) to make her endearing and not just evil for the sake of evil. She had a reason for her being the way she was. The Storm King was pretty cool too, though he unfortunately didn't get much characterization. He was just your typical evil villain character, but he was at least funny. I will say though that while the animation and art themselves were excellent, they used CGI a lot to give locations the appearance of having depth and also for certain magic scenes, and it just looked really out of place. The movie was also tonally bizarre, and I think it might've scared one of the kids watching because towards the end one kid in the theater started crying and her father had to take the child out. Its just strange, like its trying so hard to be serious at parts while still trying to be cutesy in others. Overall I liked it though, and despite needing to be at least a bit more creative and original, its something I could recommend.

These two things never mix. I dunno why people have not learned this yet! Remember that old Nascar cartoon on Fox Kids? D:
